i Modelling a human charactor and i want to apply with matt shadow ......
is there any Clear Tutorial about that ....

that's no big deal. open the material editor and click standard to select the matte/shadow material. Apply this to your object and that's it. Look for Matte/Shadow Material in the 3ds max 4 user reference for further information.

i know that.... but i dont know how to do the other things I.E : the shadow with the environment ...maps.....
pls give me a correct guide .....................................

Enviroment maps are not affected by light, shadow etc. To use shadow/matte material you apply it to whatever object you want the shadow to fall on, but you must create that object first. Usually a simple plane or box is used, however if you wanted something more enviromental, then place you character within a box/sphere/ whatever, with the normals reversed and the shadow/matte material applied. For further details on how you can manipulate your shadows read the online help on shadows. :)
