Something I'm not 100% clear on: do any graphics cards speed up the final rendering of 3D images/animations, or are they just for faster display? Follow-up question: any recommendations for the best graphics card for a Mac G5 (not Intel)?

Thanks--T

You have to think of the images that are used in animations and 3D renderings as files.

Graphics cards literally do nothing for the rendering of images as a file. However, graphics cards do wonders for images rendered to your display monitor. That's the real difference.

Unless you are using a renderer that takes advantage of graphics chips (like nVidia's Gelato), you won't see any difference at all.

Sorry I can't help you on the G5 graphics card question.

The best non-quadro graphics card you can get for the G5 depends on the model of G5. If you have a G5 with PCI-X slots, the best card is the ati x800 mac edition. If you have a slightly newer model with pci-express slots, the best card is the nvidia 7800 mac edition. Cheers!
