View Full Version : Cel shade effect without shaders!!!
LucentDreams 02-24-2003, 09:42 AM was working on a small project and suddenly had a brainstorm, an effect I had not even though of. This doesnt' do lines, so you are still left with NAAM's shadow effect, Per Anders Expresso effect or the Fresnel effect for lines, but for the acutal shadin, its so simple it I can't believe no one has provided a scene using this before. No special shaders just the standard C4D material.

Remotion is also working on a new cell shader. Have a look at his gallery on hit site.

Nice fx kai, but i think it would look better with hard shadows maybe :)

nah don't have hard shadows in 2d why in 3D, in 2D spent so much processing trying to feather and blur shadows to not have them hard seems weird to do the opposite.
but for anyone else all you need do is turn it to harshadow and your set, its amazing how flexible this one is considering its much simpler.

top result....as you say so damn simple....
as you know the simple ones are the best.
tried with hard, area shadows...still prefer soft.
made edge same colour as objects...darkened up a bit and got rid of black line...prefered black line.
tried excluding plane from lights...with hard shadows for both lights and changed look.
just shows you can't really mess with a good thing....so i ain't gonna mess any more.
thanks for sharing....you know how i love this cel stuff....

that works really well, I'd forgotten all about the illumination tab on the attributes panel ( its missing when you double click a material :surprised )

I mean I just expected it to be on the popup window with the rest of the material channels when you double click on a texture in material manager
anyway.
been messing around with it a little, added a fresnel to the colour channel to give thicker lines

great screenshots squid, nice mini tut I think.
One thing I want to point out since I noticed you still used the AM tab to acces illumination, while there isn't a checkbox for it, in the material editor oyu can change ilumination seettings by clicking on the owrd illumination in the bottom left corner, this way XL 7 users know how to access it as well since they don't have an AM.
The key to the celshade effect is the diffuse fallof setting in the illumination tab snd the specular fall off in the specular tab.
