View Full Version : help animating a water drop
sketchbook 01-31-2007, 07:15 PM i need to animate a rain drop which comes down to a surface, hits the ground, and then falls down into a crack.
i am pretty new to animating, but would i be correct in assuming this all needs to be done by hand?
thanks

Or the free version of realflow that came with that online spanish c4d mag a while ago.

Maybe Per Anders can give you a clue about how he did this (the intro part) http://www.peranders.com/gallery/images/reelweb02.mov
Soo beautiful!

Sorry forgot the link:

Realflow is avaible for OS X, though (at least for version 3) you will have to install X11 http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/ for it to work.

Just some suggestions:
You could use metal balls with dynamics if your feeling lazy
and you version of 4d supports it.
create a crack larger than the metal ball have cam angle it so
the meta is out of site once it goes into the dynamic hardbody
fracture ( the sidewalk with crack )
Another approach is morping, simply create the shape of the raindrop,
lets call that the master, duplicate it twice. These additional copies of master
are called goals. Make one of the two copies into a midstate
of change and one into the final state ( I would imagine a nearly
flattened of flatened waterdrop ) then use morphing tools to morph
through your various goals, the final being a flat water drop. Be sure
not have ANY points ( Vertex ) criss cross each other or morphing will not
work as expected, and also be sure sure that you only use your original
object as a source for duplicates as geometry must match vertex for vertex
predictable results.
Yet another method would be animating the shape of spline, if you
know how to spline model this would problably be the second easiest.
create the drop shape as a lathe nurbs profile an simple animate the
points to achive the shape you desire. Im sure ive even heard of
spline morph plugins.
Another method I can think of would be using a mixture of Taper bulge
and melt on the raindrop geometry, this approach should also give very
pleasing results, at least usable for animation, these days nothing I do
doesnt go through post FX anyway, where additonal 2D warps and FX are added.
The very last method I can come up with is using proximal but Im not
sure if that would work I havent used it in a number of years, several
actuallly. But there was a great user of this shader named, Jeremy.
His knowledge in that area is problably unmatched. He post many samples
of many experiments, good for all 4D user experineced and unexperienced
alike:

I hope one of these methods works for you perhaps a mixture of them
is where your answer lies.

RF4 is available for OSX. For more help on realflow:
http://www.realflowforum.com/index.php
It's the official unofficial :) forum for RF users :). Great community too.
For the realflow drop you speak of:
http://www.nextlimit.com/realflow/html/training/tutorials/Daemons/Tutorial02_Daemons/index.html
This tutorial is for version 3, but there shouldn't be any problems adapting it to RF4.

yeah, too bad my time and budget won't allow for a $2700 application. i downloaded the version for C4Des, and it's pc only i am pretty sure. the zip file has x86 at the end.
but wow, free!

there's a demo version for mac osx on nextlimit.com which has the same limitations as the one on C4Des.
