View Full Version : Modeler crashing on loading an object
jademcquade 01-31-2007, 08:14 PM Hi guys.
When I load modeler the program opens up fine. But when I load up an object I am working on the program gives me the error message, "modeler.exe has encountered an error and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I have tried searching the forums to find out why this is doing this.
I have tried reinstalling the program. It worked thing for a few days and then the problem reoccured. Does anyone else have this problem and can help me find a way to stop this happening.

I've had this problem happen to me before a few times.
Usually I would have to open a previous version of the model I was working on.
It really does pay to save revisions of your model, and often.
Hope that helps a little....

Yeah when I open a previous version of the model it does load and the program runs normally. Unfortunately the latest model is hours ahead of the last model in detail.
One thing that I find quite strange. When I load the latest model in modeler when my computer is booted in 'Safe Mode', the program doesn't crash.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
I have never had this problem in the few years I've been using Lightwave, it's very strange.

Guessing you didn't set the Hub on Autosave? It's a useful feature and you'd have an up to date version of the model stored in the Hub folder.

One thing that I find quite strange. When I load the latest model in modeler when my computer is booted in 'Safe Mode', the program doesn't crash.
That is odd - SafeMode, however, often disables a lot of features like accelerated video, network, etc. That means it could be a number of system related 'possibilities'. In fact, I'd look at the details for your crash and see where the crash occured - Usually you can spot if it was a video driver issue, or something similiar.
Do you know if you have anything going on with your textures that could cause your OpenGL to crash? (Huge image maps, etc). Try switching all your viewports to Wireframe mode first to prevent OGL from attempting to display textures, etc. Reload the model that crashes to see if it's possibly the issue...
Also, are there any features your new model is using that could be causing the crash? For example, Catmull-clark subdivision creates a LOT more polys then SubPatch subdivision. If its a CC model and your levels (general options panel (o)) are way too high, there's a potential crash reason right there as it tries to create the necessary geometry. As a guide, SubPatch Level x generates an x^2 number of polys (SubPatch Level of 3 = 9 polys). CC Level x generates something along the lines of 4^x polys (CC Level of 3 = 64 polys)
Are you using any third-party plugins? I know in the past that TB_Fakeskin was a pain when loading versions that had used older versions of the plugin. The parameters would change, and hence the plugin would read too much data, leaving Modeler with an invalid load...
Those are just a handful of common issues I've run into - They may not even be relevant to your problem, but theres some ideas for you... One thing I know from working at a Studio fixing issues like this is that most the time you can find a problem, and solve it with a little detective work.

Thanks for the tips guys.
In reply to your question Kevman3d, my model doesn't have any textures on it yet as it's still in modelling phase and has not been surfaced.
My model loads fine now, I loaded a previous model and redone the elements that were lost. I now save my model more regularly as different versions and no longer merely save to the same single object file.
I am going to look into setting the hub to autosave. I am a bit scared of using an auto save feature though because if I delete a piece of geometry by accident and the program crashes, the affected geometry could be lost forever. I will test out Hub Auto save to see how it works.
