hey guys!

just a quick and basic one, i know it's already on here somewhere, but i just couldn't find it.
i need to set up some basic car lights. i use just two plain spot light.
when you look at it from above you can clearly see it behaves quite unnaturally. (see attachment)

there shouldn't be any dark areas where the two lightcones intersect...
is this a limitation? i bet i'm just doing something wrong...

It does look odd, but check to see that this is in fact correct or not by rendering out both lights seperately (either via multipass or simply by switching off all other lights first) and then mixing them together in photoshop or bodypaint using the linear dodge (or add) mode. If the result is different then there may be a bug, otherwise chances are it's your light setup. Don't forget that the lights own contrast plays a role in the percieved way that lights interact.

Change the cone angle to something larger. It should work fine then. Also, check the edge fall-off. Default is at 50% I believe. Put it at a lower percentage.

Works as you would expect here.

Real world headlights cross about 10 feet infront of the car, is it possible the lights are simply aimed to far outward? That's what I have to do here to get that effect. As Primitive said increasing the outer angle would also widen the beam.

Thanks a lot for your input guys...

I must apologize, the example was not really that clear.
As you suggested, I increased the cone angle which intesifies the weird effect.

And Primitiv: This is not visible light, this is just the light cone that is cast on the ground plane. So there is no "edge falloff"... That would be in the visibily tab.

I provided a scene file, so you can see, there is really nothing fancy going on...
When I deactivate "Inner Falloff" it works as one would expect... but then again I need it soft edges. (see attachment)

Any other ideas?
Thanks a lot!!!

did you actually try per's suggestion of rendering each light separately and compositing them together to test if the lights are behaving normally or whether this is a bug?

if you did then you would see that this halo effect is just an unwanted optical illusion and that the lights are fine, just the results are not to your liking.

cheers, simon w.
