Hi all,

am I the only to believe that softmage|3D should get a good price reduction. With all the majors dropping price on their software, Maya for under 6000$, lightwave for 1595$ (that's pretty cheap) and Max for under 4000$ (not sure for this one).

Since version 4.0 is gonna be comming out very soon, it would be great if they dropped the price to compete at least Lightwave.

What do you think?

Theo, I think you work for softimage, any chance to see that in near future?

I agree with Yann, It would be really cool to be able to buy softimage 4.0 at a reasonable price...

I think it would much more encourage the game industry to switch on this software instead of using Max so it would ensure a long life continuity to this great old school application...

This was my 2 cents...

This is the last I heard on SI3D version 4.0 pricing.....

$1,995 USD for SOFTIMAGE|3D base.
$3,995 for SOFTIMAGE|3D extreme.

Seems pretty reasonable to me. But then again, this is old info and could be off. (But if it is, it's not off by much.)

Ok , thanks for the info Ed. Do you know where I can get a list of the features that are missing in soft|3D base. I've checked out softimage website but I can't find anything. If it's not too "naked" i just might take this one instead of the extreme license. Still I would like to see soft|3D extreme at $1,995 USD, since there kind of letting it slowly die at $4000. What I really think is that they don't really want to continue with it, if they take a little share of the market back, they'll have to invest on old technologie for the support.

I don't need support, give me a discount :D :D

Do you know where I can get a list of the features that are missing in soft|3D base.

In previous versions a couple of the things that were missing were Metaclay and Particles. And you only got 1 Mental Ray license (instead of 2). But I have no idea how they plan on handling version 4.

Hi Yan,
Sorry, but I can't comment about prices. However, we do promotions from time to time with some really good deals, so I'll keep you posted.

My local resseler just got back to me, it's in canadian dollar (I'm in montreal).

- Base (Windows NT, Linux & Irix) is $4490.00 + 890.00 (support)
- Extreme (Windows NT & Irix) is $7490.00 + 1190.00 (support)

Money change rate is $1.60 CND = $1.00 USD

I don't get it, US pricing seems to be lower (a $1500 CND + support difference).

if anyone can clear this, please do so.

Why upgrade Softimage 3d to 4.0 since they have XSI. Whats the difference?
Why not let it die?

Here are the prices from B&H Photo a reseller for Softimage 3D in New York City.

http://www01.bhphotovideo.com/default.sph/FrameWork.class

Avid
Softimage 3D Xtreme version 4.0
Price $3,499.95

Avid
Softimage 3D version 4.0
Price $1,999.95

Softimage 3D v.4.0 isn't going to die too quickly since some shops isn't jumping into the XSI bandwagon. Particularly, ILM who still uses old Soft. Some shops are still maintaining copies of Soft 3D simply cuz they like it and the pipeline works. Especially, when they don't have the time to learn a new package. You may be suprised to learn that not all Soft artists like XSI too much - Mainframe Entertainment, Rhinoceros Visual Effects.

Thanks jazzthief,

I will contact B&H Photo if I manage to get the fund to finish the project. I'm likely to save a lot buy buying the software in the USA.

Thanks again

Good luck, Yann.

Now if only Avid would drop the prices of XSI comparable to Maya.
