haha, your film scared me. When he first walked in and there was no sound, i wasn't absolutly sure if there was no sound or if the sound was just quiet, so i turned up my volume. LOL then the music starts up when he gets into the room! omg, haha.
I liked it :)

ha - oh man that was twisted! but i liked it, especially the ending...
I thought some of the animation was weak, mainly the main characters reactions at certain parts, and the music you chose didn't neccessarily appeal to me either..... Although it was better the second time i watched it.
Overall good job -
Awsome mike!
Good work man, nice to see it all done, congrats on finishing everything!

Absolutly great work. I really like your character designs, they are spot on, and the animation is exactly what it should be all the way through. I was really amazed by how solid and well put together this is, I like everything about it. Projects like this make me want to do my own short animation. Siggraph and festival material all the way.

Congratulations Mike.
Very nice piece of work.
The character movent you create keeps us really busy watching your video.
You could also implement your scenario with some more elements into it, giving a better impression and realism, even with your cartoon style, and you could definately give a special attention to facial expression modeling. That's where the cartoon style is based in. Well .... good luck. Hope to have a chance to see your video improved.
Once again congratulations.

Really funny piece!! Two main crits: animation should be improved a lot, and sometimes the camera shots are a bit slow.
Only one question. Who's being killed by the woman?
Good work!

It's very good, but I think the lack of sound effects hurts it a good bit. Good job other than that! I really liked the style.

that was really, really, really, really, really strange, and funny :D
anyway, the younger girl could use more expression in her mouth. It was really funny seeing somebody like her hacking up somebody. That was also some odd reactions in the guy.
There could be more expression in the faces, but overall it was good.
Now what was actually under the plate :p

That was really good, i would have enjoyed some opening sounds like the door closing and stuff, its just odd how theres no sound at that point, but i enjoyed it ***** from me

Damn that's good ...
Much better than that "El Aguerro" piece ...
Talk about derivative ... How many cartoons did that guy rip off for his piece again?
It's good to see some truly original work ...
Heheheheh
Nicely done man .... it turned out great .... and thanks for the nod in the credits ...
Hope to see you around ....

I just love these VFS grads... they sign up for their CGTalk account and post ONE (1), that's Numero Uno y'all reads usually like: "Hi, I just finished a film and here it is:" [d/l available at great broadband speeds].
So funny to me.:arteest:

Hey all,
thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated.
-ThirdEye_01-
I used FG with a stupidly high accuracy (2000 for most shots)
-edaddy and neolee 40-
Our animation supervisor agreed with you about the music...until I caught him humming it a few days later.
It actually grows on you. ;)
-E.Z. Schwartz and Lukashi-
The sound effects issue is something I'm dealing with right now.
There are a few more on the way (mainly at the start, keys in door, door opening), a group of sound design students are working on them. I was hoping to go for more of a music video approach and stick mainly to the music, but you're right, it's pretty empty at the start.

Hi there! This is the first time i'm replying to any animation i've watched in here, and that's coz i think this is a really nice piece of work. The style is simple and clean but oh so effective. The viewer focuses on the animation of the characters and the story, and not so much on the sets and details. I was hoping that maybe the very last shot (after the credits) would reveal who is actually under that cover.Just goes to show how engaging the piece really is.
That sweet psychotic wife seems inspired (very heavily i suspect) by the girl in the Japanese movie "The Audition" though. Am i right?
You could enhance the story a bit more by maybe hinting at who is under that cover. You could maybe make the mother-in-law (?) complain about her husband who hasn't been home for awhile.
Great work nonetheless
I am Mahir.

Overall it's a nice piece, but on a piece with (no offense) no in depth modeling, I felt the animation was lacking in a lot of areas. I would try to refine it as much as you can with such a simple scene/characters. The story + such was nice, but overall I felt it could have been executed better. Also, I think you would have been better off with absolutely no sound instead of what's in there right now. The song itself is semi-decent, but wholly out of place and abruptly introduced. Until you have a complete soundtrack in there, it'd be best to leave that out or at the very least fade it in so it isn't a slap in the viewer's face.
Mike Fetterly
02-25-2003, 08:19 PM
-Mahir-
You nailed it! Eihi Shiina's character in Audition was a huge inspiration, right down to her outfit in that amazing final scene.
-LPlasma-
No offense taken :) On my next project I'll get through the modelling stage a lot faster and be able to focus entirely on animation. About the music, however, it is abrupt and out of place, but so was his wife slaughtering somebody in their kitchen. That's what I was going for. It was a slap in his face too :)

Nice work Mike. I love the 2nd to last shot with the reflection in the platter. I think the music suits it fine, but mabey having some sound effects at the beging will help soften the introduction of the music.
Good stuff

Lunatique,
We get about a couple months to develop story, design characters, storyboard, etc. A couple months to model characters and sets, rig, weight, etc. And a couple months to animate. Keep in mind that we're very much students and still learning throughout the process. We get six months of training beforehand in classical animation, life drawing, 3D modeling, animation, lighting, texturing, and rendering. It's a very immersive program. I'm pretty embarrassed of how long it takes me to accomplish anything decent in 3D, but I know I'll get better as I go.
This long-winded essay is the result of my being embarrassed at being a little behind schedule on my own project. heh. Back to work.

lol, i loved it! really entertaining. the way you cut in the music was perfect.
great exaggerated motion. also, the reaction shot with the guy's face reflected on the lid was nice.
the part that i got a little lost on was the book. is it a photo album? why do we see that picture when the book is closed? the picture isn't on the cover..?!
excellent work. thanks for sharing:)

That was so very... very... disturbing... We loved it.
Also... to make you feel pretty good I showed it to a veteran 3D animator for movies and TV and he said that he was VERY impressed and could tell you were going to go far.

that was a great bit of animation,
maybe the guy could use a little more in terms of mouth expressions, but either way. it's great, i see such fantastic work from the vancouver film school.
i am also interested in the length of time you spent on this?
great work:bounce:

-wasted weasel-
I spent roughly 7 months on the project. Reading that makes me wince, I know I could do it a lot faster now.
-froggyplat-
Ummm...yeah, you caught me :)
That was a photo album he grabbed, but as my deadline was fast approaching and I didn't have an open book modelled...I cheated.
You're the first to mention it so I hope it's not too glaring...but it bugs me too...That's one of the things I learned at the school, that sometimes you have to sacrifice certain elements in order to bring everything in on time. Of course, maybe that picture was on the cover...;)

I didn't have an open book modelled...I cheated.
First off, I enjoyed this more than just about any other animation I've downloaded since "Tripping the Rift."
The camera moves, the pacing, and even though it's not perfect, that stumbling run is still first rate.
I noticed the book didn't get opened and I noticed how the flowers turned around 180 degrees when they get passed off, but none of it really detracted from the video.
Adding the sound of the key as he lets himself in, like you are planning, is important so that it doesn't seem like he's breaking in or going to the wrong apartment.
Otherwise I wouldn't change a thing. I really love it.
Don't go all "Lucas" on it and change it much.
Thanks for sharing it with us. :applause:  :applause:

Hey Mike, itīs awesome that you finished, I couldnīt download the reel because I donīt have a good conection in the third world, but I know its great from what I saw in the 3fort. I specially love the part where he gets out of the kitchen and heīs trying to act like nothing has happened. I think thats great acting, great body motion. Your peace is one of the only peaces that Iīve seen that show good acting with the body.
Great work!!!

really, i don't think it detracts too much from the piece. the action shows what's happening, so it's not out of place. :)

But i wish u had shown the ending...
