Can I choose to snap the cut faces tool to the grid or snap to a vertex when i make the cut so i dont have to merge a whole lot of vertices i could have avoided? I need the cut to be aligned with other edger........ Thank You.

snapping to a vertex really isnt an issue. You should just be able to click and drag along the edge towards the vertex you want to cut to. You wont be able to drag it any further than that vertex, and when you finish the cut, it wont have made another vertex nearby that you have to merge.

Under the tool options for the cut faces tool there is a thing called snapping magnets, and snapping tolerance, tolerance is how strong the snapping magnets pull, the magnets themselves are points along the edge of a polygon that attract the first vertex placed when using the cut faces tool. Look into these and mess around with them, they should be what your looking for.
