Mazaa 02-23-2003, 08:28 PM This is for a friend of mine so I want it to look good. The shading needs lots of work and I want a harsh light coming from above to shine on him. The background is going to be rock think Mordor. If anyone knows how to do rock well, please tell me. Rock evades me.

I'm assuming you mean in pencil right?
I've done a few different rock effects in pencil that might be useful. They generally fall into the stippled catergory like thus

where you treat the pencil like a you would treat a pen in a pointilist piece -
- or a sort of shakey, slanted line approach like this

I haven't achieved photorealistic results with either technique but they may be realistic enough for your needs?

Thanks for your help! Your rock techniques will come in handy when I get there. Until then here is an update on what I've done.
That's great Mazaa. He's got a really good tribal style to him!!
BTW: Have you ever been to www.epilogue.net ? If you draw fantasy and sci-fi art a lot you might feel welcome there.
