View Full Version : Infinite Planes In Maya?

I have a quick question, folks. Does anyone know if it's possible to make an infinite plane in Maya? What I'm trying to do is setup a scene with the ground (landscape) showing, but I want the ground to extend out all over the scene. How do I this? Can I somehow setup an infinite plane, or is there some trick I don't know about?

Any advice/comments are welcome!

Just create a little plane just to receive the shadows. Then apply on a "use background" shader.

using background would not solve problem. if anyone solve this, tell us, would be of great help :)

You can make a big plane to be a children of your camera... add fog.

an infinite plane would not be a really good idea.. you would bring maya to "slight" problems with depth, rendering and a lot more..

also it would not make sense since from a certain distance on you would only see a single color value, because maya would sample a zillion of points at one time to get the color value..

so just make a very huge plane.. and mind Nicool´s words.. :)

(maybe you can send a pic on what you intend to do..)

Thanks for the responses folks! Ummmm, I don't have a pic yet, as I was waiting for a solution before starting my scene. I really just want to be able to show a scene where the horizon for the ground doesnn't look like it's only 4 or five feet away from the camera. I want to be able to show a ground plane, giving the sense that the character is in a large open space that stetches out a bit.

I'll monkey around a bit and see what I can do with the suggestions you guys have given. Again, thanks so much for your help here!

try using depth fog to simulate the large space.. that helps in most cases..

if you can not show something search for a way to fake it :)
