Hi all. I just wanted to post this WIP for general critiques as far as composition, color, and whatever else you notice, before I tackle the bottom half of the painting.

I have reservations about the spheres (they'll probably go), black lightning, and of course the bottom of the image in unfinished. I'm still trying to decide what to do with it as far as topic.

This was originally done in 3dsMax and Photoshop (captured with the 3dsMax Panorama Exporter for a game sky-sphere), then I painted over it heavily with Photoshop, and just decided to make it into a painting, because I didn't need the sky sphere anymore. I'm toying with the idea of the extinction of dinosaurs. I might add a dino corpse at the bottom, in the foreground, or a large walking predator (Carnotaurus (http://lesdinos.free.fr/carno.jpg)?) that is dying, also in the foreground.

Any crits are welcome. Thanks.

Hmmm. its really just a texture and not so much a composition. I do see some lighting going on and a very rough landscape which i do like very much. I would start laying in shapes. come up with a composition then get back to us and we can offer better advice. Good idea though. keep working.

Thanks for the crit (again). Yeah, adding a subject/shapes/focus is what's coming next. I just wanted to ask for crit on this first step (the fleshing out of the theme) before moving onto the important stuff.

Also, if this image were to stand alone as-is, would you buy the black lightning or the spheres, or do either of them jump out at you, looking out of place?

Cool but confusing picture!

I really like the feel of this (a bit hard to understand what it is but then again I'm a simple guy) :)

I'm not going to say anything about colors because I'm viewing this with my poor LCD monitor (have to buy better when I get rich) but the black lightning is a bit weird...now that you mentioned that it is black lightning I can see that it is but before that I thought them as tree branches or something :D Don't get me wrong, I really like the picture but it need maybe some elements that define it and bring back some order to the chaos. I know that bottom part is going to be ground with elements to give scale but you might consider tweaking the colors a bit more different than the sky to separate it from the clouds.

Foremost Sphere looks actually really good but I'm not so sure about the one behind.

Great work nonetheless!

Thanks for the crit :) Yes, I agree strongly that the focus is quite chaotic, so the next thing I'm gonna do is trash the spheres and black lightning, and begin working on the foreground.

Good idea too, about using a slightly different palette for the foreground. I would've gone ahead and made it match the sky perfectly, probably causing contrast problems (of course, nothing a quick color pass couldn't fix :)) Of course, it'll be right down its alley, but just offset a little.
