View Full Version : How to use Cinema4D Multipass renders in Photoshop

Hi,

I have a problem concerning how to use all the different layers inside Photoshop.

I modeled a cartoon figure in C4D. For a test render I put in a floor- and background object and gave them both a compositing tag to get a nice white fore/background. I also used a 3 light setup (Area lights), giving one of them shadow (also area).

Never worked with the multipass option before so I thought I gave it a try. I followed the right setup conform the manual instructions. I used almost all option-passes; Ambient, Diffuse, Shadow, RGBA, Specular, Ambient Occlusion (Yes I have the AR module!), the seperate lights option and even brought in an Object buffer for the main character, etc. After al this I started the render (in PSD format).

When the render was finished, I opened the Multipass render in Photoshop and yes I have all the layer passes.

But the strange thing is; the cartoon figure is not surrounded with a nice white floor/background as it supposed to be, but with a black background and a greyish floor...?

When playing around with all the multipass-layers I discover that the black/grey floor/background is caused by the many black passes. But, when I deactivate these layers I to get the white back again, al the effects like specular, Diffuse etc. disappear. I understand I need these layers to keep a good render and to be able to adjust the layers, but how do I get my white background and floor back?

I sincerely hope that people with more experience in working with Multipass-layers inside Photoshop can help me to understand the basics or can re-direct me to some clear tutorials about multipass in PS.

Thanks for any help in advance!

If I think I unnderstand you correctly, tou have all separate PSD files, one for each pass. You combine them all into one PSD file and now have all your layers.

Now, you have to set the layer mode to (most likely) multiply on the layers (not counting your main RGBA layer.

I just started experimenting with multipass in Cinema, also, so I may be wrong...

I don't think he's rendering to multiple PSD files, but a single file with multiple layers.
