View Full Version : Girly girl faces
Hi. ^^ I'm new.
I'm painting portraits in Photoshop right now... I did one two days ago and one yesterday. I think I'm improving, but I would really love some feeback on what I need to work on. ^^

I like her eyes, her skin and her hair. Her hand is pretty blah, her lips aren't as luscious as I'd like them to be. And, she is lit by a random purple/blue light while the background is a flat color = paradox.

Better eyes, I think. Better lips. Not hot on her skincolor... it's supposed to be white like snow, and it doesn't quite look it. Her bright light actually has something to do with the background now, yay. Not the most realistic red/pink light though.
These are my thoughts. Feedback on other things I need to work on is very much welcome. ^^ Thank you! :D

Beautiful work and I'm glad to see you on CGtalk!
As far as whitening the skin goes on the second image, with just a little Photoshop tweaking I think you can achieve your desired results. What I usually do if I want to add a little more impact to an image is:
+I copy the flattened final artwork onto a new layer
+Give it a slight gaussian blur
+Desaturate either the whole thing, or only certain colors depending on my desired result
+Use Hard Light to overlay it onto the original
+Change the opacity of the new layer depending on how extreme I want the effect
Example here (http://siys.com/z/images/hardlightex.jpg). I'm not sure if that's exactly what you want, but I think it's worth playing around with if you're unhappy with the skin color.
Keep up the great work, and I look forward to seeing more posts by you! :D
firebugs, ivy > thank you ^^
zyanthia > that's a really neat effect. i always thought that people just painted it that way from the get-go. it's not quite what i mean, though.
I read in a Julie Bell book that it's really easy to pick skincolors. Basically, no matter what color you paint the skin, our eye/brain will still think "oh, that's regular human skin color, it's just under a really strong colored light". So, in the same sense, it should be much harder to make a picture where the character's skin is ACTUALLY white, as opposed caucasian and just desaturated by a dark environment. So, I basically have to try more and learn more and use more refs.
But I will definitely play with your suggestion, that sounds really neat ^^ Thank you! ^^

Oh! I see what you're saying. When I look at the image the skin does read as skin color and not as white. However, I think that's in part due to the hilights in the hair and eyes which both appear "white" in comparison to the skin & bg. Maybe if you brought more of the strong hilight color to the skin itself it would appear to be more white?

Hi there! I've admired your art for ages, since the early days of the Gargoyles fandom ^^
I like these portraits, especially the expressions, and I think that you have a good grasp of facial anatomy. The only small thing I can point it is that the skin tones look a little monochromatic, so maybe try to add different colours to various zones of the face - Like warm oranges for the forehead, a little red/pink on the cheeks and nose, and perhaps a few cooler colours on the lower areas of the face (this might all vary depending on lighting conditions too). Only a little hint of these colours mind you, otherwise your character could end up looking drunk, lol! I think this will help the skin "pop" a bit more.
Can't wait to see more work!
New piece. Not a portrait, I'll do more of those soon, but a piece celebrating kimonos and a small but beautiful island off Hiroshima.

Semi-mat. The Torii is heavily edited. The water was left alone. The rest is painted in Photoshop.

I've improved on some things on the girl, I think, since the last portrait. The boy is my first ever even-remotely-realistic-boy-face (and plus I was an idiot and didn't use refs for it), so please don't flood it with crits, because I know there's a million things wrong with it ^^ The girl's fair game, though. I'd love some crits!
New one coming tonight or tomorrow :)
