View Full Version : How to transfer/ preserve paint weights/rigs?
Ewan Lee 02-23-2003, 04:35 AM Hi
I'm just started skinning my first model, after doing a smooth bind I started painting the weights... and found out that I needed more geometry around some joints... but as soon as I start working on the model I lose all the weights I painted! (Maya detaches the skin or just messes up the weights...) I have tried to export the skin and re import it but it's just messed up! Any help would be greatly appreciated, is it also possible to export skeleton & deformers/weight and apply it to another (similar) model?
thanks in advance

the scipt the other poster suggested is quite helpful for your problem as weights are copied to geom points (vertices, cvs...) by looking for the closest match in the saved weight and/or interpolating them if necessary (this is the case you have).
mayas tools for copying weights dont work quite the same i think. the whole artisan attribute map procedure revolves about having proper uv on your meshes to store weighting information. this approach can be use for copying weights to different topologies i think but maya wont do it without further help i think.
i dont know how the copy / paste weight think works technically(anyone?)but i _do_ now the saveWeights script always worked like a charm for me when i had to restore weights.

topistic, octagon thanks for your reply I will try the script asap! Anyway have you ever used Michael Bazhutkin's Weightools? They seem to do the same work and you can also export/import cluster weights.
cheers
