View Full Version : Cloning an object with hair problem.

Hi all,

I have a simple scene. I used a sphere to which I added hair, I then made hair a child of the sphere ... I brought the sphere into a cloner object using the Object setting and made the object a spline ... everything worked fine. It would render when I hit render scene but not when I tried to render to the picture window?

I saved the scene last night and now I can't get it to render the hair at all, yesterday when that happened as I was rendering the scene for various tests if it did not render I would toggle off and on Hair/hair enabled and it would work.

If any one has any ideas on this I would be grateful for some insight. :hmm:

Cheers,

David

It works OK here. Did you hit "Play" button, or at least step it one frame?

Quick sample below with either Grid Array or Spline modes.

Hi Alan,

I tried that and it made no difference. It's all so weird as It worked yesterday .. at least in render scene.

Thanks for your time, I will probably try and recreate the everything.

David

Strange, how does your scene compare to my sample?
If you can zip your scene and I'll have a look?

Cheers, Alan.

Hi Alan,

I will attach that file as soon as I am back in my studio.

Best,

David

Hi Alan,

The original scene file was too big to attach (even when zipped) so I took out a few elements.

This is so weird, I was just working on another scene, again with mograph. I created a large sphere and a very small sphere, used a cloner object and dragged the small sphere into cloner and usihg object mode with large sphere as object. I then attached a vibrate expression tag to the lg sphere enabling rotate in three axis (60 60 30) then I brought in a tracer object and made the lg sphere invisible to scene and render. This created trails from the moving spheres. Then using a sweep nurbs object I dragged in a circle spline and the tracer object ... making small spheres with tails.

Once again I lose something, (the tails) in any render except when I use render scene. Will not render in preview or picture viewer?? :banghead:

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers,

David

On your hair on spheres scene the problem is multifold.

Firstly you've set it to include the sphere in your objects list in the post effect. seeing as only different spheres exist in the render (clones, not the original) this means that it's not able to render on this sphere anywhere. Don't bother including/excluding here.

Now onto the other problems that are really about efficiency and necesity, and may be intended.

Secondly you've applied a hair material to teh sphere itself, this will just result in "fur" on that object, this obscures the hair (so either have one or the other, otherwise it's just wasting rendertime).

Thirdly you've set the AA in the hair to best, at this resolution with hairs this size that's overkill.

Fourthly you've set 55000 hairs per sphere, make sure you've got enough ram for this render! Also with that hair width the result may not be desirable (may just look like a solid mess).

---------------------------------------

Now onto the second scene. The problem is that the the picture viewer only shows the current state, while the external render renders the current frame as if it was loaded up to that point (except within NET render where it "prerolls" or "pre-plays" the animation up to that frame). So you will have to render the whole animation up to this point in order to render the trail in the external picture viewer.

Hi Per-Anders,

Thanks for the in-depth response to my problems. I most likely won't get to make those changes until Monday morning.

Will give you a heads up at that point. :)

Cheers,

David
