most text editors these days support customized syntax highlighter, and its great! my question is: is there a more IDE-ish program for mel?

i am particularly looking for an ide that can actually list all the procedures thats defined in a given mel script, and when i click on it it gets me there. i am just sick of copy->ctrl+f->paste->enter now.

i know the mel studio pro can probably handle this, but is there any other options? anything free maybe?

thanks

if there is no free ones out there, perhaps i will choose the cheapest. i briefly read the IDE thread pinned on the top, someone mentioned that ultraedit supports displaying mel procdeures as well. if its true, it would be great. its cheaper then mel studio pro and its external editor, i can use it for other things as well.

can someone confirm this please?

Vim is a powerful free text editor that supports mel syntax.

there's also jedit:

http://www.jedit.org

free, cross-platform, and amazingly customizable. you'll find a number of useful add ons on highend for jedit (syntax highlighting, function browser, mel doc search),

I use ultraedit, but do not recall UE displaying MEL procedures. Unless there's a special add-on for it, all I recall it doing is Syntax highlighting.

Hi Nessus,

The Crimson Editor has support for MEL syntax, unfortunately doesn't integrate into May, but helps anyway :)

press ctrl+space, it shows all the matching procedures, but ofcourse, supposing you have your syntax file from highend3d installed hehe :D

MAXYA is a free plugin for MAYA. It has a whole lot of other stuff besides the MEL editor, but the MEL editor itself seems fantastic although I haven't put it through its paces extensively yet.

The thread with the download link is here:

or on Highend3D :

Hope this helps.

i have jedit setup now! it is fantastic! i wish i knew it sooner.

the only thing i havent be able to do is to receive results from maya mel editor and display it from jedit's buffer.

right now i can send scripts to maya directly no problem, and according to the mayaEditor help, jedit is capable of receiving results/warnings/errors from maya to its buffer through the socket. but how do i actually display it inside jedit? perhaps sunit already got it setup? can anyone help?

for MAXYA, it dose look promising! last time i installed it was incompatialbe with my dual screen setup, the sidebar would crash nvidia display. maybe the newer version is more stable?

crimson editor! free and comes bundled with MEL syntax already... awesome... I use MEL Studio Pro in Maya for the most part, but crimson is top choice until I found MSP

Yes I find it quite useful. Also try and setup the codebrowser which uses ctags and a custom file for it to show procedures in an open script

I have some problems with this as well, sometimes it will pipe the output of maya back to jedits buffer but more often that not it just doenst. so hopefully someone can enlighten us.

has anyone had jEdit setup so that it can display results from maya?
right now i have been sending buffers to maya and execute no problem, and according to the help the results will send back to jEdit in a new buffer. the new buffer window does show up in jEdit but its always empty...

Can anyone with jEdit experience help me out here, please?

by the way, it is a really powerful editor(with the right config, it can even be a light weight IDE). i think i will stick with this program for a while from now on ;)

This is funny. I just posted my thoughts on jEdit on my blog. Freakin Awesome app. I used them all before (UltraEdit, PsPad, Crimson, ConText, WingIDE, Mel Studio....blah, blah). This one has it all. With all the plugins available and macros as well, this really extends this app way more than any other free apps and dare I say apps that cost.

Yea, I'd love to know how to get the results from Maya back into jEdit, however the plugin that is out there seems like it does not work. Oh well, really not a huge deal.
