Title: Hunters
Name: pascal blanché
Country: Canada
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, VRay
modelled with 3dsmax and mudbox,
rendered with vray and lots of touchups in photoshop of course ;)
This is one of my attempts to achieve some painterly and old classic illustration by using digital mediums. Here i pushed the technic even more by going almost monochromatic in tones. I wanted to get a 80's cover look, something more graphical..
Background is photo based (nasa shots of mars)
Some skeletton parts like the spinal cord are from an old viewpoint model ( yeah im lazy sometimes ;)
Inspiration: Frazetta, Bisley and Terada
photoshop filters used: poster edges, pain daubs and lighting effects
hope you'll like it :)

hey pascal
much stronger than your last piece and as always amazing lighting , mood and composition.
great stuff.
cheers
Nice! The first thing I thought when I saw it was Frazetta (well after Pascal Blanche of course ^^). Reminds me so much of a combination of his moon men (background) paintings and that classic pose he always has (perhaps something along these lines (http://tonova.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/frank_frazetta_1.jpg) ). Anyway, looks great! :) Monochrome works well (you like those colours hey) and as always great composition. The only thing I would say is that perhaps because of the mixed origins maybe a couple of the elements look a little out of place? Maybe it's just me :P Wouldn't want to criticize the great Pascal Blanche :P

great work! the thumbnail is really awsome got my attention immediately, i was expecting a different lighting. in the thumbnail i saw a very nice lighing between the woman and the man.
anyway, you could see from a mile away its ur style! great on!
good job man!!...very nice pose!!!...I love your colors!
Pascal,I think it was better if you used a glossy metal material for the armament(with the same hot colors)...
overall....great!!!:wise:

hey Pascal, awesome piece as you always get us used to! I love the composition, it's pretty balanced with axial simmetry, and the guy looking in a different angle took my attention inmediately. It seems perfect to break the monotony. I like also the position of the blades like a cross with a really nice continuity in the characters' arms.
I know you're such a 3d master, but I feel that you want to hear any critic to still improving. My only critique is the guy's blade. If Im not wrong what we see it's a kinda blade cover or something like that isn't it? but I feel that if it's this way, it doesnt match very well the overall look. I mean, it looks very detailed and advanced, for the age I believe the characters are in. I imagine a more like pre-history look for that object, something like fur or leather, no emboss or relief, i dont know. Well, that's just a point of view.
Thanks again Pascal for sharing your work with the community.
oops... I forgot, I say Front Page for this piece....

A good homage to the master..:)
I feel the hands are the weakest part of the image.

Beautiful new image "Hunters", I saw this picture with less textures as others you made, It's like it wasn't finished in some areas like the eyes of the femenine creature that are in first sight and the weapons but you said you was looking for a monochromatic look and is very well achieved. I like more previous works with more painted textures over the characters and weapons but this is only my taste. I saw also that the background doesn't match very well with the characters It's like they were statues and a poster in the backside.
You made an spectacular modeling and pose, plenty of the most original details and things that in a character could be. I love your work as always.

I like the image as a whole, sweet light and composition, but the eyes bug me a lot. Especially eyes of the girl - they make her look like a sculpture, not a living person. Even a hint of detail and structure in there would IMO add a lot.

Great work and very like Frazetta's work in the 70's. The backdop the poses the build of the characters all are like his style. Great work.

Hi Pascal, as always a great illustration, more in 80's sketch book style, tones, colors and i personnal love this art period, with some comics in paper. :scream: i'm however agree with Raul-Reznek for the global lightning. When i saw thumbnail, i was expecting a more contrasted light between the two characters. It's look like there is just a omni in ambiant lightning only, which color the image but give loss of depth between us. (i don't know if i'm clear... :D )
Anyway, you've got a soooo great style and anatomic is simply impressive, especially the girl.

Wow! Magnificent work Mr. Blanche... I love your use of restricted colour palettes in your pieces, really makes them stand out from other pieces, as well as your trademark style.
The poses are great! Very powerful and confident.
Good composition!
Keep up the great work! You remain an inspiration to me and many others I am sure...

Wow, nice! I jumped to the rest of your portfolio for a quick glance and was blown away. And then I realized one of your charactes is on the home page banner of the site. Deservedly so, I think that guy's my favorite.
For this piece, I think everyone's holding you to a higher standard - I can't believe it's clocking in at an average 3* Sure, people can nitpick it to death, but overall from the color scheme, to the complexitity yet readability - it's a 4 or 5* piece in my opinion.
I'm not saying the points aren't valid. They're necessary in order to grow of course and improve future work. It's just that really, the piece is great.
That said, if I was forced at gun point to make a comment - I'd say the warrior's left bicep bothers me a bit. It looks maybe a little too squished.
But again, awesome stuff. I've bookmarked your website and will surely check it out when I have more time.

Hey Pascal, great work here, I like how you've done lightning.
This said, I would mainly like to know if you heard of, or if you directly know M. Eric Girard from Ubisoft Mtl, he's my cousin and I would love to get in touch with him. I know this is not the place to ask for it, but i'm trying anyway.
Thanks

thx! horizon is a bit more faded and brighter too, it has more depht now
Bruce Pennington eh? yes i know his work, thanks for the comment, really appreciated :)
Fiuu ! You totally gat it!
I found this very deep. As precise and detailed as reallity (3D) but as free and bold as painting (your style and skill).
Great image. Nice mythic atmosphere. Congrats.
(ahum, so totally no mecha hun? ;) )
Hi Pascal.
Finally i can drop my comment on this one!
I like it a lot. I wasn't convinced by your last pict, even though i enjoyed many specific details in it, but this one rocks. All your references are blending together and create what i think is unique with you; maturity of inspiration and no freakin' fan art !
What i mean is; yeah, there is some Frazetta (amen) and Druillet/Moebius (the guy's face) and some old school - 70's french freaks from Metal hurlant + manga+comics inspiration.
But it's yours now, and it rocks.
I've got a Conan poster in my house, from Frazetta, standing on a mountain of skulls (yup, the original one, muhahahhahaha!!! joy joy), and i can only think of your work as a nice and cool reference to it.
Your Mudbox technique is better each time too, without falling into dumb details.
Keep groovin bro', keep groovin'

thanks for the positive feedback guys, (especially from you Loic e338, because of our common taste for the good old school covert art)
i think im starting to get things right: good balance between speed and quality, and 3D VS 2D.. im still exploring other possibilities and creation processes.. im having fun actually ;)

[QUOTE=JoeWamp]
"complexitity"
I'm going to start using this word all the time. Funny as hell, JoeWamp.
On with the crit. Hands aren't as polished as some areas, as mentioned. I think they're the weakest link.
The chick's right arm looks a wee off, I think the under side of it is bowed upward too much maybe. Like a rainbow arm to give you an idea of the direction.
Her thumb on her left hand and index finger are oddly shaped.
but her legs in that pose look spot on. She does have great complexitities.
I don't have any gripe with the eyes, I like them a lot actually, the lack of lashes and brows looks odd but she's shaved a good bit of her hair so why not have those gone as well?
Someone mentioned the guys right arm, it looks really off, could just be perspective, although I don't see how. the direction the elbow is pointing gives the impression his arm is almost parallel with the horizon, if this is the case then the bicep would be at the same height as the shoulder or rise above the top line of the shoulder.
The girl is a cool character her face has a lot of personality and believable features where the dude is far more cartoony looking. He's comic book caricature style and she's realistic looking in her proportions. Little tummy on her and everything.
I also would think the weapons would be a lot less gaudy and huge, I think if this had a less comic book japanimation weapon look going on it would be really appealing. It may be personal taste, but I really feel like it would make more sense with everything else going on in this scene.
Especially considering the complexitity of it.

Great composition, lighting, great job on the man's chest and their faces... my only complaint would be the hands looking horrible - fingers in particular and the bend in the girl's arms looks rubbery. I like the colors. The legs on the girl look VERY cool. The muscles you sculpted there amaze me!

Hey Mr. Blanché. Another great piece from you. Althought its not my favorite as your previous works are but i think its very cool. Loved the bold poses. Very stylized. IMO the untextured surfaces looks a bit dull, espacially on the red bones. My two major critique would be the left hand of the girl. It almost seems chewed up. And other is the background, it dosent seem to go with the subject IMO. Other them that its a great piece.
waiting to see more amazing works from you.
P.S. Loved the muscles and the girl's lips!!

Love the details. At first it looked like they're entirely primitive but then I saw the chain dangling from the female's right glove, which has a metal look on it. Also, there are those metal rings and the male's beads. I have a question, though. Does the male have a sleeve over his left forearm? The sleeve seems to disappear towards his wrist.
I like the whole bones and flesh theme and the lighting too. Great work.

Pascale you're has been ineresting in the past, and obviously you have skill ;) I have to be honest though it's lacking some originality as of late... you can do so much more with the medium... seems like you're really re-using your base mesh's or older models from before, they strike too much of a strong resemblance...
Do something NEW! create!!! be fresh.

When someone does good work there are all these but kissers that follow them around and I can't stand it.
I admire you for not being one of them.
I however don't agree with your assessment. I think you mistaking his style with his forms. His style is very easy to pick out and is in everything I have seen him do. None of the work however seems the same to me IMHO. His forms are original to me but perhaps you have access to images that I haven't seen?
http://www.patricknagel.com/ Patrick Nagel is good but the similarity of his work disturbs me perhaps in the same way you are speaking of?

I do in fact re-use my models.. half of the reason , obviously is because i dont need to remodel em, the other point is that even if i would recreate new characters, they would look exactly the same... this is my own style ;)
Maybe i am more using humanoid themes theses days, but i have some other picts in progress that look quite different ;)

You have come very close to pulling off a Frazetta. My only crits would be her weapon doesn't look very sharp, and our hero's face doesn't look grizzled enough. He's too clean and handsome for my expectations. Sort of reminds me of Mr. Incredible in a loincloth ;) But the overall effect is very nice.
i just can't look to details because the concept (the reason why you did it, and how, of course) is just amazing.
tell me how do you start a work like this? ideas or sketch?
thanks
