I'm working on a 'making of' for the 3dtotal website and also for the 'Digital Art Masters' book, and I'll be explaining better than. But as a quick description I would say I used a high vray environment (5,0) and some vray lights pointing inside from all the openings. Some Vray pointing to the brise soleil at the top as well, to give them a bit of more lightening and create the felling that light is actually coming from there.

Thanks everybody for the nice words!

Very nice lightning and architecture, even though I think that if this was build as shown in your image the nice concrete stairs would collapse...

i was just wondering where you got your references to build the scene? was it from one picture or did you have access to blueprints?

This is a great render, love the play of shadow on the top of the central structure and how you have indicated movement by blurring the inhabitants :)

The animation was originally in 720X480 and it took about 10 days at the office's computers (8 cpus), mostly during night hours.

Thanks again everybody for the nice comments! :-)

Fantastic render. But one little question - how are the stairs carried? I mean they are very far out of the wall and even there I can't see any backing. *wonder*
But when this one is build give me a hint where I can find it. I'd like to sit there in the floor below and study in this moody room.

What i dont like is the direct light on the concrete staircase walls. the lighted places are burnt to the white so the blend into the background. I think thee area shadows would make that less painfull and more realistic. Also a litlle gainy but maybe its compression.
Beside that..very nice picture.
