View Full Version : material: weapons
mawashi 02-22-2003, 12:42 PM Hello all,
I'm working on a set of weapons, and I started with the shield first. My aim is realism, but as you can see, it's far from convincing at this stage.
The shield was suppose to be made from steel and gold, but right now it looks like it's made of stone, and... something else.
Can anybody please help me on how to improve the material please? Or the modeling, even :)
Thank you very much in advance.

Uh ^^; thank you very much,
That's very encouraging, honest! But I know that many of you experts will say otherwise.
Leigh? I just downloaded your texturing tutorials in texturing section after I posted my thread. Now I'm going home and read all about it :) Thank you for the tutorials!
Oh yeah, I was using TIFF map for skylight with Brazil r/s. I'm not very good at Brazil yet, still trying to explore it, hence the splotches on the ground (don't know what to do to fix it yet).

suggestion: go get some images of real gold, and real steel, that will help a lot. and if you can't re-create the textures exactly, then just copy and paste, and edit the photos, and that will work too...

It all looks a bit gritty and fuzzy, is that just the file compression?

mawashi: it's looking good! maybe we can hope to see it on a character sometime?

MetalDragon: Thank you very much :D I still have much to improve
DevonH: Thank you, I'll definitely try that :)
Akkalis: Yes, it's the file compression, since I have to get it under 20kb. Plus it's the blotches of the Skylight from Brazil I was talking about. Not enough sample rates, maybe.
Johra: Thank you ^_^ Character? Um... maybe. I have some paladin + old church scene in mind, but I can't promise anything yet :p I'll complete the weapon set first, then we'll see. But thank you very much for the encouragement! :wavey:

Nice looking shield, good design and mapping, but it looks more like stone than metal at the moment

I really like it! I think your texture work is fantastic, especially the design. I agree with you that the silver looks like stone and the gold looks more bronze. Check out the fantastic metal tutorials at www.secondreality.ch!
Keep on the good work, i want to see more!

Oh, forgott! Where can i find those texture tutorials you wrote about earlier?
Cheers!

Again, thank you Cronium and Frank Dodd. Yes, it still looks like stone :p
I'm still reading Leigh's tutorial at the moment and still tweaking the textures. Right now it looks worse than before (not even close to anything in nature) So no updates for now, sorry.
Cronium, you can find the tutorial in Texturing section (www.cgtalk.com ---> Texturing) you'll see the threads at the top rows.
And thank you for Wiro's website address, I have read them but unfortunately it didn't help me to achieve the looks I'm aiming for. I think i have to work it out by trial and error method.

This is the latest update. Although I personally think it's better than the last time (better than a bunch of test renders I did after my last post anyway) I still find it's not very convincing at the moment. But since it's quite satisfactory (for the moment) for me, I'm moving up to model the sword.
I know I should put something around the shield to reflect, so the reflections show more. I'll re-render it again and post it here when it's done. So, in the meantime, please comment and help me on how to improve it. I'll really appreciate it.
The sword itself has been modeled and now I'm UV unwrapping it :)
Please help! Thank you all in advance.

The first render/update was way better IMO :)

The first one was better? ^^;
Well, somehow I can see it that way, too. The problem is the first one was too much like stone. While I think the second one looks more like metal, but it lost details, and it's not really a convincing metal either :(
Argh! My head spins >_<
I've collected some reference pictures, and they show this new-made smooth shield, but I couldn't immitate that either :( Since the material on the pic is smooth (the color is generally the same across the surface, only a matter of bump and specular map, I'd say) I didn't copy-paste the picture to my maps.
Any suggestions? I'm a bit stuck here :(
Thank you Aron & Igor.
The rune was supposed to be Hebrew, but since I don't speak it, I just mashed the keyboard :p If anyone can help me with some translating, it'll be very neat!
Thank you everybody, I'll post the sword update next (and the shield, if I can get it right)

You could try adding an enviroment or perhaps a reflection map. Also try raising the glossiness to make the specular a bit smaller. A realworld metal just reflect small points and/or streaks of very bright light.
Otherwise your work is great! IŽd love to see the sword! :)

IMO, the roughness was good in the first texture, and the reflectiveness is good in the second. Perhaps you could try combining the two.

Thank you Cronium,
Silly me, I did a test render with a simple sphere and found out that the reflection is not working at all, that's why the last render you saw is so dull.
Thank you too Jos,
That's what I was thinking, too, and you can see my last update here.
I know it's still too shiny and smooth for a decorative shield that's been hung for ages. But I'll work on that later :)
It's reflective alright (thus I think it looks much more like a metal), and it also has this specular stripes, as in brushed metal... i think :p
Please tell me what you guys think. Thank you very much for all your comments, and I hope I don't bore you all with my updates.

This is the sword, I'm still painting the textures.
The modeling is simple, since I'll elaborate it a bit with the texture, like I did with the shield.

The material on the shield is looking much better now an excelent glistening polished steel. It even seams to hafve ansiotropic effects in its surface. Very nice.
The geometry on the sword is looking great just waiting for textures.

I haven't put any dust on the shield yet, but here's the shield and sword.
