View Full Version : Stikfa Characters *animation soon!*
AgentX 02-22-2003, 09:20 AM Hello all! I am currently working on final projects (animations) for two classes. One class is a Compositing class, and the other is a Special Effects class.
For both animations I am using a Stikfas character I modeled. If you don’t know what a Stikfas is…you should!
Stikfas (http://www.stikfas.com)
or
A cool Stikfas site! (http://www.tfh.com.sg/stikfas.htm)
Anyways, I modeled and rigged it earlier in the month…thank God…and now I am working on the rest for the animations. I am not going for a realistic look, in case you were wondering. I am trying for more of a "cute" look for then to kick each others butts! :p The compositing one is a mix of live action and CG. But the Special effects one is going to be cool. It is comprised of all CG elements. Two differently colored Stikfas’ will fight each other with weapons, using particle effects, and softbodys.
Comments and critiques are welcome! However, bear in mind that I may not get around to fixing it right now due to the restraints of time I have. This will be a weekend of no sleep…again…
Here is a real pic of a Stikfas toy (old one when first released):

The environment, not quite finished, I have added a cup and I created textures for walls, and floor:

eventho you're not going for realistic, i'd suggest considering the use of gi to get rid of the overly plastic cg look.
other then that, good luck on the project.

Cool, X! That's looking good so far, and it'll look a lot better with wall/floor textures. My only crit would be that the metal textures in your scene look a bit odd, especially the faucet, but other than that it seems fine. Can't wait to see the final animation.

Thanks D. I think the faucet looks wierd becuase of my crappy lighting. I havn't spent time lighting the scene yet. And yeah, the walls and floor are textured, even though you don't see the floor in the final shots.

Here is an update. This is the first scene were one shoots a rocket at the other. Let me know what you think of the rocket. Thanks.

P.S. I am still doing lighting. I am going to add more light behind rocket to shine on the black Stikfa, and the green Stikfa is in a really dark spot.

Here is a better lit pic. What do you think? I need input! :)

Looks good, the particles are nice, and your new lighting is definitely a lot better. How much of a render time are you looking at, by the way?

So? Where's the animation? You tease us with these great renders, and then leave us hanging.Whew!

Yeah sorry about the lack of animations. I rendered scene1 (the screen shots) last night. But there was a problem. Some screwy geometry bugs, i think caused my the 3d motion blur. I am going to fix it today, and hopfully have scene 2 and 3 renderd by this evening. as soon as scene 1 is fixed I will have it for download. Sorry to keep you waiting. Check back soon.
*5 minutes later*: UPDATE:
I am re-rendering the first 26 frames with are screwed up, without motion blur. I am gonna add it in Shake.

i really like the idea of those two toys fighting... could be quite a funky bizarre movie..
here are my crits... all personal opinion only of course ;)
- increase the specularity on the material of your characters. in your reference pic its rather high, giving it a nice hardplastic look, yours are a bit more dull, making it look rather like rubber.
- though not visible in the animation: a nice kitchen wallpaper would surely add to the atmosphere. right now its all rather greyish in greenish.
- work on the lighting. for my taste its too dark and too diffuse right now. if you look at like frame 30 or so, the character in the foreground as well the one in the background are both much too dark. and the shadows are a bit too diffuse for me. dont know if you used area lights or so, but maybe having the shadows a bit crisper would give it a touch more realism... though of course i am aware photo-realism is not wanted, i think it might add a nice touch.

-All the objects in your scene need bump and spec maps. The toaster needs cratches, the cup needs to 'feel" textured. Plastic is a porous material, give it some scrapes and scratches. The characters need bump and spec maps as well.
-The rocket and smoke look good to me. Im not a particles/effects guru, but I like it.
-Increase the motion blur slightly
Animation
-In the begining, hold green guy for a few seconds. Show that he is on edge and trying to hide. Maybe have him quickly look to his left just as he goes around the corner to his right. (So you can tell he thinks he's safe for a second.) Right now the shot looks rushed.
-When green guy see the rocket he needs to have an antic/take. Maybe even a full body shake for a few frames.
-Green guy drops way too slowly. He should take 1-3 frames MAXIMUM to drop to the ground. Right now it takes him about 15 frames. With motion blur, 2 frames can really express the speed of the drop.
-Black guy really needs stumble/shift backwards from the kickback of the rocket. I can see you've tried to do that, but its too slow and too subtle. You should consider having him even take a stap back. He should also have a more dynamic stance and be lower to the ground as if he's bracing himself for the force of the rocket. His head animation should be ALL secondary animation to show the force of the blast.
-The rockets animation should speed up as it gets closer to the camera. A slow buildup to a VERY fast pass by the camera like you have. Exagerate the hell out of it too. You'll see a massive difference.
Its an overall good shot, but I'de work on these parts to really give it a profesional feel to it.
