Title: DNA money
Name: Juha Valimaki
Country: Finland
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop

Sometimes what comes out of a test tube is just what you are hoping for... The concept here is that only small percentage of projects in bio-med field will ever produce money and it may be difficult for outsiders to see what's so different in their slimy goo in test tube. Lighting is created using large white cards behind the background plane, below the tubes and behind the camera. Card luminosity was tweaked to get white and almost white reflections. The stuff in tubes is lit with three spot light (no shadows). Background plate has two spot lights, one for overall color, the other for hotspot. This is a personal project for my own (and hopefully yours) enjoyment.

Great work! You've done a wonderful job on the glass, and the lighting is really nice. Interesting concept too!

Thanks for comments! I have an updated version in the works. I still want a little bit more definition in the background. Both liquid and glass use dielectric MR shaders. In the above image both are actually same shader with IOR 1.33 and light blueish/greenish color. Having different IOR (1.33 & 1.5) seems to give better detail in glass/liquid interface, but it also shows more clearly sloppy modeling ( = intersecting surfaces)... I'll update my portfolio image later (not sure if gallery image will update automatically after that).

This is a really good image, but I wish I could tell you what it is that makes the liquid look more like gooey gel substance to me than water. I don't know what kind of liquid you were orginally shooting for, but it looks too 'thick' and gel like to me to be flowing as quickly as your image suggests.

my 2 cents.

>> ... more like gooey gel substance to me than water ...

Usually moving water has motion blur, maybe it's that? There also could be more high frequency detail, like "waves" or something... anyway, now that I look at it I think you are absolutely right, there is something too thick about the liquid to be water. (Ok, since I created it I can say it's supposed to be DNA goo :))

The image is now updated with my final version. (what you see in this thread is the latest version).
