Title: Spits in Flight
Name: Andrew Trawn
Country: Australia
Software: Maya, Photoshop

One of my favourite aircraft. The Spitfire MkIX.
I modeled this for my schools final project, and decided to have a go at Maya’s fluid effects for the clouds. HDRI was used for the lighting.

Well, spit model is fine. Textures are too saturized (markings, green camo color). I don't quite understand why cockpit is open and why above clouds there is no sunshine, just ambient HDRI lighting.

Unfortunately pretty much everything in this image needs a lot of attention.

The Spit is woefully inaccurate: http://aircraftwalkaround.hobbyvista.com/spitfire_ix/spitfire_ix.htm

The textures again need some serious attention

Lighting is really quite poor I'm afraid you'd do well to look at the art of Wiek Luijken at http://www.aviation-arthouse.com/

I'm sure with hard work you'll get there eventually, keep at it.

I think the criticism from Andrew March is very 'over the top' concerning the accuracy of the model, though I do agree that the textures are over saturated and I think the materials look too reflective for a war time Spit. But overall I think you've done well for your schools final project.. keep it up

You gotta love Spitfires

Good work on your MkIX, modelling and texturing any wartime aircraft is no easy task. The clouds looks quite effective.
Apart from the other crits the glass shader is also looking a little dark.

I think with a little desaturation of your colors, less reflections on the camouflage and stronger light source you could really improve on this image.

Thanks for your comments.

Now that you’ve pointed it out. Its obvious the paint scheme’s too bright.
I decided to have an open canopy just for something different. As I have seen this in some photographs.
I'm still not sure about the clouds myself. They were a challenge for me, and I was never sure
whether I had it right.

I’m afraid I fail to see the inaccuracies of my model though.

Thanks again. Your comments are very helpful.
