View Full Version : Matte Painting: Garden for Gnomeo
slooper 02-22-2003, 07:31 AM Ok, been working on this a bit - very first matte painting and very first time using a Wacom. I am creating this as a background to replace some awful video footage I shot for my animated gnome, which is in another thread around here somewhere.
please comment! love this forum! :buttrock:

just a scaling test with my gnome animation - the gnome is just a garbage matted frame from my last version so dont critique him yet :)

well I don't know what else to do to this image short of just little tweaks here and there. So please give me any suggestions if anyone has any. Thanks!!!

Fakie... it doesn't look like any of it is CG, infact i'm pretty sure it's an amazing comp of lots of diff elements, ingeniously combined into a backdrop..
as for crits... i love the contrast of the latest one, but the composition of the earlier one.. hope that helps!
PS. how are you finding your WACOM? ive recently got one as well, but i haven't tried doin this sort of thing on it yet... i've done pic comping b4 with a mouse...
this is my wacom effort..

Dave> I absolutely LOVE my wacom! Although for some reason, if I switch the mouse for too long, I lose my pressure sensetivity and have to restart Photoshop. This is my first real piece of work using the Wacom. Also my first matte painting too :)
Btw - really liked you snow pic. I've never been overseas, so I was completely fooled. Good job!
And thanks so much for the compliments. I like the composition a bit better in the above pics, but I need an obstacle for my Gnome character to run into - hence the addition of the log. And I also didn't want it to look like an unfinished piece, which considering this is supposed to be a lavish garden, it was looking not-so-lavish and more like a forest floor. So I think I'll just clean up the transition lines and shadows and go from there. Once I add depth of field I think it will really tie it together.

Don't think the pale branch and leaf in the very foreground to the left works convincingly.
That log thing on the right looks like it could morph into a jaguar or monitor lizard though! - Can you see it??!

made some minor adjustments...there's more things that people have suggested I do, but I need to move on to compositing, so this portion is more or less done for now.
Any opinions are still welcome!

Looks really good man:) But Im not too sure if those yellow flowers behind the leaf in the foreground works too the advantage of the matte. Good stuff tho for a 1st go!

finalized the matte painting and moving on to compositing. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find my scene file with my previous animation, so it's back to keyframing! GRRRRR Oh, well - practice makes perfect.
