View Full Version : bump and displace question
bonestructure 01-24-2007, 04:43 PM Seems like a simple question, but I don't know the answer. In making bump and displace maps, what shade of gray is neutral ground? In other words, what shade of gray won't displace the mesh up or down? Does anyone have a RGB code for it?

128-128-128
assuming your renderer uses midgray as base level(=no displacement)

I'm having trouble with this in studio max. I apply a 128 map and it displaces the entire mesh when I move the spinner. Any ideas? I can post screen shots if needed.

screenshots would be nice :)
depending on what renderer your using, you may need to adjust the output in the material,
check 'enable color map' & adjust the left curve point from '0' to '-1'

What displacement method are you using? Displace modifier? Disp Approx? Mentalray?
If you're using the displace modifier, check the "luminance center" checkbox, and keep the value at 0.5.
