I'm modeling a Warhammer 40k Space Marine for a school project. Once I finish him up I want to make a bunch of variations and then animate them on a battlefield. If I keep them relativley low P then animating them shouldn't be too painful.

Any thoughts? Advice?

I'm going to keep working on the textures. :)

Thats pretty damn good, i wish i was doing 3D in school. Im a big citadel guy too, and the only problem i can see is that the eyes are too close together, and the pack could do with being a bit smaller, with larger spherical vents on the top.

Other than that, Great! Keep it up and add some scratches to that texture, make him look battle-worn and well 'ard ;)

Looks good man. I assume for a game model? How many polys? And what school is this?

  looks really good so far...i agree with satans8937 about the eyes bein a little close though..and the texture for his chest with the skull doesnt look as high qual as the arms and helmet....how many polys are you using so far? can we see a wireframe of him?....is the animation going to just be a large battle of some sorts?

Awesome, I really like that. I agree with the eye distance comment, and I also thought maybe the toro proportions are odd. I'm looking at a different figurine though, so I'm not sure they match up. I've been working on a Lictor recently :D Only, it's in high poly. If warhammer 40k was brought out as a real time strategy on pc it would blow everyhting away I bet. Do you agree? it would be hard to pull off. Maybe a combination of starcraft and a playstation game like Kartia. i dunno if you know either of those, but warhammer 40k is really cool anyway. I never played it really, just read the codex' and read numerous stories. Anywho, good choice of model, I really like it. It should go over really well :)

Thanks for the advice, it has proved valuable. I spaced the eyes further apart, increased the radiation vents sizes and decreased the overall backpack size (ever so slightly....).

Anyway, I'm happy that the bulk of the texturing is over. It took me forever! I'm happy with most of it but there are a few issues (the backpack balls have a seam on them and their connectors came out black).

I'm currently a student at Full Sail in Florida ( www.fullsail.com ) and this model is for a class called GCSD : Game Character and Scene Design. He is just under 3000 polys.

And another note about the model is that this is the generic root model for a series of space marines that I want to build. That's why I'm not going to far into details like dirt and scratches and battle damage, I want those things to vary from model to model.

I want to make some short sequences of Space Marines on the battlefield (with little or no continuity). I just think it would be cool....

More comments and critz please :buttrock:

Can anyone point me toward a good resource to help me get this model rigged? I gave it a try but I got some pretty nasty results.

Yo Tylak, I am in Full Sail right now. About 4 month ahead of you. If you are interested in rigging it I suggest you talk to some instructors. Trust me...they are invaluble. Talk to either Ken, or Aaron from labs, or Chad Kendal the teacher. They all made a game, so they are proficient in rigging. Also tlak to Chirs Maraffi from Computer Character Design. He is awesome at rigging! I have gone to him many times about rigs with my game characters. Also, I am doing characters at teh moment for games at the school. I have good knowledge of rigging. If you want to ask me questions or tips, you can email me:

Looks good man! Let me know if you got a good grade?

Cool man, you're going to graduate soon eh? How are things looking?

Yeah, I have a gcsd lab on Monday, hopefully they can help me get this thing rigged and I'll be on my way.

Cool. Yeah graduate in a few months. Things are looking...uh...scarry. Yeah. It is frightening that I will graduate soon, and i am supposed to have a job. *gulp* Yeah... BLBC will scare you silly with the "job search" they make you do in a few months. Yay... Anyways, good luck man. And if you ever have questions of rigging email me.
