View Full Version : Game Art Comp #3: (SouL): Final Fantasy : Ahriman
It's that big eyed monster thing you see in the later areas of the games.
Most recent WIP shot:
Polycount is 1142. Uses 1 512x512 texture sheet.
He's actually finished and I've already gotten in 2 animations for him. I can't upload the more recent stuff because my connection keeps timing out.
I may or may not submit this... depends. There's still a good amount of time left to make something different.
Scratch that. Uploads finished.
Here are the download links to the anims.
Both need divx and are each 120KB.
Texture is rendered with self illumination set to 100%.
I rendered the textures at 50% in the anims. Just so it has that in-game feel to it.

nice work! however this was supposed to be a WIP competition :shame: can you post up your images starting with any sketches/templates and also some wireframes.. these competitions are supposed to help people see the process of completing models and for people to comment/critique. takes all the fun out of it if you post up a finished model.
can you also post up your reference images from the franchise so we can see how the model/texture compares.
really looks nice.. one of the strongest entrys so far, you really should start another and show us the progession from start to finish.. even if you do finish it in a week  . and would be better to pick a franchise besides final fantasy.. other people are picking game models (im doing 8bit nes character.. ) but its MUCH cooler to see art from franchises that arent already in the recent game market. Its not a big deal though as someone else is doing final fantasy and everyone is picking really cool themes. hope you do another!

Looks great! However, did you do this before the 3rd cgtalk competition was setup? Just curious cause you got this linked over at polycount too.
Anyways looking great.
Here are the wip images I made for the thread I made over at polycount
Concepts I worked off of:
(Basically the same model... but I sifted through the different textures to figure what I can do for my own texture)
The original idea I had was to recreate the model used in FFX. But I got very impatient trying to figure out how I'd replicate the colors and look of the original texture. So I just came up with my own.
This was why I asked if we were to recreate an existing model or if we can add our own stuff to it.
No. the model wasn't started before the contest was announced. The model was started Tuesday morning and completed today (Friday). I went through it quick because the model wasn't that complicated.
I just stumbled upon more Final Fantasy models so I might have a hack at those... I really like this stuff. I'll try and post WIP stuff... I'm just not used to it. I usually post WIP stuff if I run out of ideas or if I get tired working on something.

you did it justice! i remember those guys...
this competition is getting hot!
Yay, he made it, you already know how much i like this character (your interpretation as i dont know the original).:). And i think you must be the first to finish.
Did you keep the polycount so low so as you can put it into a game? Whatever it is great work.

The model is very nice and the texture too (although one can see the mirroring seam).
Too bad that the animations aren't as good, and this is all the more apparent because the original is so damn well done.
The movements are pretty robotic and look like they are linear-interpolated. The entire movement doesn't look like he would be floating using the wings.
Just my 2 cents

I completely disagree wanzai! I think the entire thing is extremely well done! this texture, model, and these animations are better than lots of stuff you can find in games! anamzing job!

hmm my vote goes with Wanzai. The modeling and texture are very good. His models are almost identical to the reference, however the animations seem a bit "A then B" in other words not very fluid. I think the main motions are in place...if he just added some more pre motion and after motion to especially the flying. I think the flying animation would then be that more believable. Right now the flying looks more like scooping up something than trying to stay in the air.
The attack animation is really odd too, in terms of motion...but the poses are excellent and from what I remember match really well to the game.
Just my thoughts.
Polycount was low because that was all I needed, I guess. I could have modeled the fingers and such... but when I looked at the ref I got the impression they were just textured on. So that's what I did.
When I first started modeling I really wasn't keeping up with the count... but I knew that the limit was 2500. By the time I was satisfied with what I had... I kind of just stopped there and moved on to unwrapping/texturing.
I'll see what I can do about the animations... I'm not exactly an animation expert... but I like to try stuff out :)
Here's the texture for the model:

Oh, that highlight on the eye is actually not mirrored... I said wrong. It's just... so broad.

Same here :)

Make another! :bounce:  :bounce:
Yeah, the eye highlight kinda messed with me a little bit there. But I remember seeing some eyeball type creatures in 7 or 8 (I think) that resembled that.

Those creature were in the Series since Finfal Fantasy 3 (I'm talking about the jap. 3, back then on the NES)
This guy is so cute i want to cuddle him :)
