Title: Dreadnought - Freakurious
Name: AimBiZ Andreas Karlsson
Country: Sweden
Software: Maya

This one started off with a tutorial with primary goal to learn model highpolymechs, which in this case is the famous dreadnought, a mech from the tabletopgame Warhammer40,000.

At first half I followed the tutorial almost throughly but as it wasn't very accurate from the real miniature I started making it all myself since I've learnt all the necessary skills the tutorial had to offer. From there I worked only from reference images.

Summary:
Used Maya 8.0
Body's base is made from tutorial with my own touch.
Rest is made from reference and imagination.
This one took me approximetaly 1 month too make.

I would like advanced qritique on this one but feel free too express yourself however you like, but be nice plz. ;)

Looks great AimBIZ. My only crit is that the edges look a bit sharp (have you bevelled the edges at all?). Other than that it looks great, although I think a gritty, textured version would also be good and would fit in better with the usual look of 40k. The plain colours you've used also look a little too clean and CG-like, but that could just be due to the render settings you've used (have you tried rendering with Final Gather/ radiosity?). Anyway, it's certainly a very cheerful looking Dreadnaught. Have you got the link to that tutorial? I'd quite like to check it out.

I can't really comment on the accuracy of your model as I'm not a 40k buff, but I'm modelling an uber-detailed Terminator at the moment, so this caught my eye ;)

Thank you for your opinions. :)

Found it a bit funny you think the edges are too sharp since they all are beveled. :P

Yeah, was thinking of something more realistic but UVmapping would've been tough if I would have any advaced texture on it and the cartoonish look was very appreciated were I posted WIP's(www.3dbuzz.com (http://www.3dbuzz.com), www.3d-palace.com (http://www.3d-palace.com)) so I went for that, and I have other projects to work on so I wanted to get it finished ASAP.

There are some differences with the original like mine have a much bigger engine and the arm is my own solution since on refpics it seemed that the arm was just a bunch of pistons melted into each other, and I also looked at the dreadnought from the Dawn of War intro and took some inspiration, like the claws.

Here's the link to the videotutorials: http://www.3d-palace.com/index.php?page=tut1
Model is not very good but you learn alot. :)

Tut's look pretty good, but I've already blown my tutorial budget on Expose books and Dan Ablan's new Lightwave book. I can see the bevels in the high-res render, I think I just missed them as the preview pic was quite small. You might try increasing your specular settings a bit to help define the edges, but I guess the cartoony look might not work with that. I also think that if time's short, you're right to stick with the cartoony style you've used as it goes well with the smiley face theme of your model. I'm dreading UV-mapping my own model, so I think it was probably a wise decision (plus there's plenty of textured 40k stuff out there already).

Anyway, good stuff, and cheers for the comment on my thread. I'm a Lightwave user myself, but there's some information about my material settings in the thread that should be transferable. I'll try to give more info about the render tomorrow, but it's bedtime for me now... Zzz

Nice job! I tried to model a dreadnought from scratch once.. i started off prettty good, but after a while i got bored and quit the project.

Good job. the cheerful colors are a nice twist to the blood and horror of the warhammer stuff :P
