Hi there.

I want to use the following photograph to simulate the effect of lumpy metal.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/75077089@N00/367191656/

The problem being is that I cannot get the lumps to show even with Bump. I also tried making a copy as a displacement/bump map and adding it 4 times as new texture tabs to the object.

Is there a way to make a texture like the one in the photo that I can apply to any model - I don't really want to have to go thru the rigmarole of re-moddeling.

Hi Mavmaramis,

it shouldn't be a problem really...

Make sure your bump/displacememnt map is a greyscale version, optimised to work as a bump/displacement.
Just using a copy of the same colored photograph won't give good bumpy results, neither would just converting it to greyscale without a bit of manual finetuning.

Also, I wondered you say : 'adding it 4 times as new texture tabs to the object'
(guessing you meant TAGS, not TABS)
Make sure you check MIX TEXTURES in the tags otherwise it won't show either.

And I thought...
Why would you use a separate material just for the bump, why not use the color + bump channel in 1 material ?

Should work out fine..
if nothing works could you post a file ?

Ah, Plus.. (but this might be harder if you're not into it)
I think it wouldn't be too hard to create this texture only by using a procedural texture, since you would like to re-use it on other models.

Good luck !
