Hey guys,
My first post on Cgtalk . Glad to finally registered here ,and im sure it's gonna be very worth it .
Anyways , i wish to accomplish skills on some texturing . I've created a model , and have applied some basic texture on it . If you guys would be as kind to just tell me how i would go on from there , and what detail should i add and stuff , it'd be very appreciated .

Rhino Model :

This is the basic model . It's quite simply constructed , as i wanna exclusively focus on making it look good via texturing mostly .

UV Unwrap :

Basic Texturing :

The texturing is very noobish , and was only done so that i could get the concept finallized .

Bump :

Final's :

Please guys , give me some tips on how i go on further from here , how i add further detail and stuff , and what i should add . Any advice will be helpfull . Also tel me if the way ive unwrapped the UV's is sufficient . Thanks in advance to all those who can help even a bit in my learning process .

Hi,

I think your in basic level ... do the following steps..

1. apply the plain checker and match the size of checker with uv layout

2. Pick the best concept image for the model.

3. Try to paint the skin colour and texture with photoshop....

Before start checkout this link

all the best ..

Thanks for your advice man , but ill need more than that to work on , especially as i have already read that post . I'll need someone to give me advice on how to go about this specific texture process , as i have no clue on where to go on from here....

Hi xedus and welcome!

I am not quite sure what you would like the final result to look like? Those red lines is that something that will be painted on the rhino or will it be something that is attached to it? How you will paint the textures depends on how the rhino will be seen. Your UV map basically looks good, but you really want as few seams as possible and where they will be the least noticeable.

I would look at reference images as a guide for painting the textures.

Below are a couple of images of an elephant I did some time ago. If you look at the maps, you can see how I have laid out the UV's. I made a cut along the stomach and on the inside of the legs.

Use color/diffuse, specular, (displacement/normal if needed) and bump map.

If you use an outside 2D paint program, then do some preliminary work and save the file (JPG is good for a quick test render or save the PSD and open that up in your 3D program). Go between the 2D and 3D program and just keep working on you maps. Don't forget to look at your references. Start with the color map (or diffuse, "same" as color), then bump and finally spec. I usually work on the bump and spec sort of at the same time.

Hope this helps you, if not I think you will have to be a bit more specific. Good Luck! :)

Nice texture Madeleine! :)

Xedus: If you need photo reference of Rhinos, I have some photo's on my site (also closeups of the skin). Browse to Animals->Rhinoceros on www.cgtextures.com (http://www.cgtextures.com)

Thanks a lot madart . I think that much advice is atleast a base to move out on . Plus i also checked your Tutorials , they proved quite helpfull in clarifying a lot of things . And the red lines over his back is supposed to be War paint , but i guess it doesnt look that obvious . I think ill be able to fix it by applying the Spec map , and making that area a bit more glossy .

Speaking of which , i have a question . How exactly will the spec map work ?? I can understand the way the bump map fakes depth based on the black and white regions....but how exactly does the spec map work that way ?? is it that the White regions show up more specularity ??

Marcel i checked your Textures out , and they seem awesome . Will be using them as reference for further preparation . Thanks a lot .

Anyways , i better get onto it .

War paint! Right! :) I should have guessed.... :)

About the spec map, there are two kinds.

There's the B/W Specular map, which shows how much specularity there is. Black is no specularity at all and white, very glossy/shiny.

And there's the Specular Color map, it's a "cheaper" way of making reflections really. If you want a blue specularity, then you add blue to this map. You could also use a blue light, but you might not want that for various reasons.

I'm using Maya by the way.
