View Full Version : Polysmooth doesn't properly affect UV coordinates
Alloy 02-21-2003, 09:46 PM I have my UV coords setup on a poly mesh. When I use the Polygons>Smooth operation, the polymesh is properly smoothed.
However -
I get stretching around the edges of every UV shell. After examining the UV layout after the smooth, it seems that the borders of the UV shells are not being affected correctly by the smooth.
Also, converting the mesh to Subds does the exact same thing...
Any idea on what causes this, or how to fix it?

I am having the same problems. is there a way to smooth the UV coordinates with the poly mesh? I am also a lightwave user and I can convert a textured poly model to a smoothed mesh without any distortion...
little help?

ME what l do to do not get this weird thing is l dom y uv on the low rex and smooth my object and trexture it in deep paint in smooth than when you will smoot your low rez the texture is done for smooting object than the problem is reapair but l dont know how to resolve it if you do your map in photoshop but l see a script from a frech guy whio resolve this .......dont reminber is name or web site sorry

Surely this is a fundamental aspect of texture mapping? It saves an incredible amount of time when you have to assign multiple textures to the same model, its just not cricket when you have too select thousands of faces on a highh res model. Does anyone have an answer???

Hi,
The funny thing is that AW has already solution to this problem but because current CC scheme will be replaced (probably in Maya 5.0) by new and unique one they didn`t fix it.

Alloy, I posted about this some days ago, and got a few responses. I couldn't personally get any of the scripts working, but.. well maybe you can
I don't see how Maya can be used for anything much productive polygon-wise the way it's done now :annoyed:

Do these plug-ins work in Maya OSX? Or is a there a place that do OSX plug-ins?
When I am using Unlimited I get around the problem by converting my poly mesh to subd's after I have textured it, then, if I need to I can convert it back to a poly mesh without any texture distortion.
How you can get around this in Complete I dont know as you cant convert a poly mesh to subd's in that version.

I dont see how this is working out for you. When I convert my text. low-poly to subd's, I get the same distortions as when smoothing it directly...maybe you could elaborate on this, I'm really looking for a solution for this (as many, I guess :P).

Well it was some time ago and all I did was texture a tree trunk in low res poly and then when I converted it to sub'd it smoothed the textures fine. Or well thats what it seemed to do, it was the first model I made in maya so I wasnt aware that there was an issue when smoothing polys so I could have not noticed it.... I'll find the trunk and check it out...
amyone know if that xyPolyTransferUV plug-in works on OSX?

Converting to SubDs will NOT resolve the problem. SubDs are my target mesh-type, and they distort in exactly the same fashion as the polysmooth.
I will give the UVsmoothing script a shot. It looks like it does exactly what I need it to do.
Any more info on whether or not Maya 5 will fix this problem?
