View Full Version : CG Human Anatomy Textbook
The name of the textbook is " Realism A Study in Human Structural Anatomy".
We have slated our release date for March 1st. To my knowledge this will be the first "all CG" textbook showing explicit detail on human structural anatomy.
I would also like to send a copy to the staff of CG Talk for their reveiw.
Here are some PR images that will give you an indication to the quality that will go into the textbook.

Wow, that's incredible. By far the most realistic human anatomy model I've ever seen. Fantastic work!
great work, and I like the lighting and the tones of the muscles and bones to study. great visual anatomy ref for modeling skin surfaces, imo better for study than the ultimate human http://www.cgcharacter.com/ulthuman.htm
the ultimate human is also an exceptional peice of work but the muscles moved funny in the vids, or am I the only one that thought so
will you offer any turntable views?

Any animations to go on a CD with the book?
Thanks everyone for the great feedback....its very much appreciated. Here is a little stats breakdown on this project.
Developer: CD Media Studio Inc.
Publisher: Kasterstener Publications
Project time: 3yrs appox 5000hours
Created with:Started with 3D Studio Max 3, then finished with 4.2
Mapped and Textured with: Deep 3D paint
(every model has its own texture map shader, with 2 gigs of maps total)
Render: Mental Ray(it had no problem with the 2gig texture load)
Poly count: 1.5 million with over 4000 independently modeled objects.
Use: Textbooks, live footage compositing and software
- the entire model is fully rigged(will be soon, only 10% and tweaking left) for Human biomechanical ROM.
here is an animation rotation of one stage of this project, but there will be a full software package available by late spring.

Know your facts before speaking so bluntly.
We plugged CDS at the front page when he first posted the images at the gallery. As Ambient whisper said Art is art we dont discriminate.
Cds: Looking great as ever , cant wait to check out the book.
Thanks everyone for your support. I'm extremely pleased that you like the work. Its been a long time in the making.
ambient-whisper....that's all we can hope for. To let our work stand on its own and be judged solely on its content and quality, without any political flotsam.
Sheep Factory...I appreciate your candor, and your reply to this post. As I'm not entirely sure of who would be in charge of this, but I would really like to send you/CGTalk a book(at the time of retail release) to review.
Thanks again everyone, as each and every post was greatly appreciated.

excellent work CDS,
thanks for the info about the renderer and maps and stuff
I imagine your file would bring a healthy machine to its knees
sam
samhodge....thanks its very much appreciated coming from someone who has been involved with a similar project. I feel a mutual respect for you and all involved with the ultimate human project, because of the blood, sweat, and tears involved(in a proverbial way of course). Congratulations to you and all involved, you all did an incredible job.
...on the topic of rendering. Yes pulling the footage for the textbook has taken over 20ghz worth of computers(with a combined 18gigs of ram) 5 months to compile. Over 3000 rendered images at a resolution of no less than 1800 x 1350.
Well we have the proof back, and Im happy with the colors, the royal purple was a real pain and thus that has to up the print run to 6 colors(the purple needs its own press as CMYK will not support it).
Its getting close(print that is) its just the conversion to sheet feed has been a total nightmare, from color corrections to layout size shape and number. Slow but sure its all comming together.(Dam we were ready two months ago until we decided to go to sheet fed from web)
http://www.cdmedia-studio.com/coverproof.jpg
(keep in mind the royal purple color is slightly off, even my digital cameral is having a hard time with it)

Will it be available worldwide?
This design looks like a medical text book, is it meant as such?

You da shiznit. And I believe I've said that before :) Very impressive Mr CDS. You've earned yourself a long break now...
Fly! Fly little CDS! Free of computers (for a while)! Fly to the beach and get some sun you poor creature who has been locked away for 3 years... ;)

miiiind blowing detail, wow!
Thanks paintbox, thats a huge compliment.
amygdalae......the models used in Hollowman are not as accurate or detailed as this one, in regards to anatomy and biomechanics(cheats of texturing/modeling structures in groups, and not individually).....the Hollowman models were used for 3min's of entertainment, but this one will be used by med students for hundreds of hours.
Don't get me wrong though.....Imageworks did a kick butt job on the Hollowman anatomy(as far as I know its probably the best human anatomy in a motion picture to date), some of which inspired me and I would also ref it from time to time.
geoffr....We hope that everyone from med students, general anatomy students, CG modelers and animators will be interested in this textbook. Initially it was geared directly with the medical community in mind, as much of the development was done with the help of Stanford University.
The publisher tells me that retail sales will be:
US - 99.95 (shipping and handling not included)
Canadian - 149.95 (shipping and handling not included)
Euro - 89.95(shipping and handling not including )
....and it will be available to international markets.
I'm in the process of getting some pre-orders, with the help of cgworks, Id like to get some discounts for all the members of some of the select CG sites. If I can get 100+ pre-oreders from CG works, CG Talk, Maxforums, and 3D buzz, then I'm authorized to give you all 30% off of the above prices.
urgaffel.....thanks urg, I've admired your work as well so the compliment is greatly appreciated. I wish I could take some time off, but there is still a ton of work to do. I can hardly wait for the day when I can take off for a month vacation with my family.
gL_spear....thanks for the compliment, its great getting this kind of feedback from other CG artists.
Thanks Guys!

Finally someone has produced the book I've been waiting for. You've done a fantastic job on this. If all you need is 100 I'm sure there are enough of us out there that would contribute to the cause. Not to mention $30 off. Will this be a book that you have to order or will I eventually see it on the shelves at Barnes & Noble?

woah, you put in an incredible amount of work on this! Congrats, great work :)
This mysterious royal purple sounds intriguing as well :D
Space Tik....Thanks, nothing wrong with a little competition. But boy its been a long hard road for a small studio such as mine. Hopefull this will be a good jump point for me.
The Art Guru...Im glad ya like it, it really has been a long time comming and is really needed due to the dynamic nature of human anatomy.
There have been some slight price changes but I did convice Kasterstener Publications to give appox 30% across the board(with no min limit)...here is how it breaks down.
...taken directly from the Kasterstener site:
The retail price of the textbook will be:
$164.98 Canadian
$123.63 U.S.
Starting June 19th, 2003 there will be an introductory offer available of:
$124.10 Canadian
$92.95 U.S.
* this offer will only be available till July 19, 2003
**All above prices do not include tax, shipping and handling.
With the pre-orders we have something else planned, but that will not become public till the pre-order comes online this Tuesday morning(June 17th, 2003)
We hope that in the next 6 months that large retail distribution outlets will carry it, just have to play the waiting game right now, and step up our marketing to schools and online.
cgjie....Thanks
Opacity....thanks, I really appreciate that, and yes the royal purple looks incredible....Im really glad we took the time to go with it.
