What is currently the best program for recovering deleted files, and why? In terms of ease-of-use, performance, features, reliablility, compatibility. Thanks.

I use OnTrack professional but there are several cheaper alternatives out there.

It also depends on what you're looking to do. File recovery is a vague statement since there's file recovery for RAID, file recovery in a lab environment, file recovery on HTFS filesystems, FAT filesystems, NTFS filesystems, ext2/3 filesystems.

Can you be more specific?

1. no application will work if the files get overwritten, so stop using the computer immediately

2. you want a direct sector scan ap, there are several out there I use FileScavenger

when you "delete" data (then delete it again out of the recycle bin), all youve really done is told the OS to forget there is anything located in that space and its now free to overwrite it with new data, the old data is sitting in plain sight to a direct read. Until you overwrite it that is.
