Hi!

This is a wip of my entry for SPECTRUM 14 and EXPOSE 5. I wanted to paint something with a dragon--something mysterious and fantastical.

It all started from an image I saw in my head just before going to bed. I just had to sketch it quickly before sleep..

As a kid, I've always been fasinated by adventure stories and films--especially the ones that take place undersea. And so I pictured my diver discovering something enormus in the black abyss..

Here are some sketches of what I pictured the sea dragon may look like..

it's really nice to see all the initial sketches involved for this concept. It's like peeking into your brain. I love it! thanks Kei

funny, "cute" is the word that came into my mind too.
Not sure where are you tring to go with it. The sketches are allmost all cute, but the colored sketch is dark and mysterious. Even if you are going for the feeling from the colored version i like better the pose from the left bottom corner of the first sheet of sketches.

I am curious how it will turn out.
Good luck,
-claudiu

It reminds me about miyazaki . (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0594503/)
This is a good thing considering the mood you are aiming for. You might find some references in his movies.
Keep up.

This looks like a fun project - can't wait to see how it turns out! Really nice to see the other sketches that helped you determine the final layout, too.

...BTW, if you've just started working on this...it isn't eligible for SPECTRUM 14 if you began working on this Jan 22nd when you started this thread:

"Work must have been created or first published between January 1, 2006 and January 1, 2007" as per the PDF entry form here:

http://www.spectrumfantasticart.com/entry.html

But, it's still good to go for Expose 5 and SPECTRUM 15. :)

I thought I'd seen someone else also do a similar underwater scene, but with a giant seahorse though, and not the fun seadragon that you're doing...but they did it in 3D instead:

Hey Kei,
great to see all the preliminary sketches as you work through this. This is the kinda stuff i love to look at. I gotta admit sometimes the progress sketches can be more intersting than the final product.
Just looked at the pic tatiana mentioned too. There are definitely some similarities but i think your composition is much stronger and i prefer your dragon design. At a preliminary stage i think your color and lighting will be more effective as well.
Can't wait to see how this turns out!
