"Boudica The Warrior Queen"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boudica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boudica)
She is one of my heroes from history.
This is a Queen of the Celtic tribes of Eastern Britain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Britain) (60/61) that mounted one of the most successful uprisings against the Roman Empire.
Raised as a warrior, she avenged the taking of her land, the raping of her daughters, and her own torture by the occupation forces of the Roman Empire (Nero was the emperor BTW).
Her revolt decimated Roman legions and colonies in Britain.
She used to charge to battle in combat paint in her war chariot.
Lets just same that the male dominated culture of the Romans, did not see her coming at all.
BTW her name means "VICTORY" in the Celt.
(And BTW so you know this is not bull, two separate Roman historians confirm this)
For more info (and how she looked) read her bio:

awesome!! Ever since I saw that great futuristic Boudicca painting by I-forget-who I've wanted to do this. In fact even before then. Of course I wasn't thinking at the time about the fact that I can't actually paint portraits at all well. I at least tried.
The timer caught it at a pretty awkward moment... I might continue... 60 minutes in photoshop.

well, i'm not very satisfied with the pose... but in any event, it took me much to long...

SalamanderCoral: Thanks! I was definitely interested in portraying the younger, human side of her, showing that spirit that would lead her to become the furious warrior she did. I love her because ever since I found out she had long red hair and truly stood up for herself, I've wishfully imagined her to look like me and wanted to be like her. We come from the same part of the world too. =]
I loooove the dynamic-ness of your sketch and the details on her skirt and boots are awesome too. Very powerful!

kind of ashamed to post this, but hey I need the people practice, I tried to portray her as a battleworn determined woman
2 hrs PS 7 ( the 60 minute version is below, she needed some hair and stuff so I took a bit more time)

Er... well, trying to sketch in color is driving me insane, and this is probably more like 3 hours than 60min.. the canvas is quite a bit bigger and I've drawn like 3 poses but didn't like any of them. Mostly wild scribbling. Darn you, Roberto, for bringing up one of my favorite characters, so I get all distracted...
Photoshop, intuos3, that jazz.

LOL @ zyrq's post. I don't know why,but I love your picture.
It might not be your intention, but she's like a raging mad women that noone dared to fight!
She could surely win the war with that face alone.

so, is your sketch actually a sort of selfportrait?

Lucavi: thankyou for the compliment Johann.. But your sketch is very nice, and as brittany said you have no right to hate such a good work.:) The colors you use and the way you use them with the detail of your sketches always astound me.
Ehhehee, thx for the comment simpleblob, laughed out loud. Her expression grew along with my frustration of not being able to paint her... I imagined her as an older, not so pretty woman filled with anger, hate and revenge. And warm welcome to the sketch forum!
some other C&C: (Everybody likes to get some, so pay it forward!)
@Vahn: I love your style, you are in my top-5 daily sketchers. great colors, altough she looks too young to have adult daughters...and she looks so happy,so maybe it's her happy teen years before all the tragedy. BOOBS...;)
@Ivy00: You truly are improving scarefully fast! can't wait for another half year from now on ,what might you be doing then! we shall see... her neck seems somewhat short? and I think your attitude at practise is great: I myself tend to give up and try other things if I can't do something.
@gnarlycranium: I love her. Great green eyes! and overall color scheme.
@Lucavi:  another great entry. I think your secret weapon is the use of IRL pencil. Just great. What exactly are you unhappy about it?

Thanks! Color is hard! I was trying to go for outdoors, with a dreary overcast sky and some smoke in the background, kinda dark grey-green, but getting skin tone with that sort of ambience is really funky. I've had so little practice with color, glad it came out like something! I like the horse in yours, the head is a spiffy shape, sorta creepy.

Geeeez lucavi, I always say to myself I wish I even had in inkling of lucavi's talent. Your sketch is beautiful
Zyrq - ha ha thanks, I do really have to push myself to attempt people and I don't think her neck is the only thing that is off lol. Your's is cool, I like your style and the dramatic feel to it.
Adolfux - welcome and hope to see more of your sketches in the future , I like the way you used color in this one
Everyone else, wow, awesome entries in this thread

Yeah, I have to agree...I'm constantly stunned and humbled by the speed at which folks can accomplish entire concepts here! I fiddle and fiddle and fiddle and STILL louse up the anatomy. HOWEVER....no pain? No gain! My ego is in a great deal of pain right now. :D
But I'm nothing if not stubborn.
~daniel....I hate you. S'all I can say. (But it's a good kinda hate, ya dig?)
~salamander, I gotta love your graphic style and expressive line.
~brittany, what can we say! It's YOU! And you're always top notch.
~gnarlycranium, I'd love to see you move this from sketch to painting. Great start!
~Mats, I'm not sure all the oozy textures work here. But it's a great pose!
~lucavi, your design and vibe are so melancholy. Faboo choice of colors. I love your stuff.
Seems I'm stubborn...AND wordy. And now, my Boudica in a tender moment. With her sword. Sucks, but there it is. Cheers!
