View Full Version : MAx Radiosity and Bumps Problem
TimWoods 02-21-2003, 08:37 AM Anyone found that when you use Max radiosity in V5.0/1 that bump maps go really weird. Like large black splodges with no definition. Is this my user error or do other people have the same problem.
:thumbsdow
Can someone give me a solution or work around to getting the bump maps looking like they should!
Thanks
Tim

Hi Tim,
Bump maps only really show up when you have a light hitting objects at an angle. If you're using a Max skylight then you've got light coming from all around your objects. Have you tried adding a spotlight to your scene to help bring out the bump maps ?

yup, have erco IES lights, sun light systems and skylight for accurate lighting of interior, without radiosity the bumps are fine, with radiosity my lovely wooden floor has large black splodges over the surface. turn the bump off and its fine.
could be the sky i suppose, as its not a direct light unlike all the other lights. but its fairly esential to have one.

you need to add a radiosity override material to the floor material, and then change the "bump scale" to a lower value...or is it higher... just tinker abit
should work.

I have the same problem but I can't get the indirect light bump scale method to solve it. I only get the "bloting" when the surface is at an angle to the camera.

hmmm thats what indirect light bump scale is meant to fix....i think.
you may just need to turn on super sampling for you floor texture.

still no luck with the supersampling.
Here is a picture of the problem (right wall). I am trying to get a white paint affect.

wow, didnt work hey...man thats weird...hmm does it only happen at that acute angle?? for instance if you move the camera to the other side and look back at teh wall does it look ok?, if it does then it could just be that you have the bump map turned up too high on the walls

Yeah, sorry I forgot to mention that it only happens at acute angles. And the amout of bump mapping has no affect, only when the bumpmap is off it doesn't have the artefacts.
Btw thanks for the replys man

that indirect bump seems to have sorted it out.
but it would be nice to get bumps working in areas where there arnt any direct light. i suppose this is asking too much. im grateful for the help. dont want to look a gift horse in the mouth!

max_5: I tried rending with the file that you gave me, and after i had added the advanced lighting override material and set the indirect light bump scale to o.1 it rendered fine. So im not sure what you tried.

You MUST use Raytrace MTL with GI and Bump. There is a problem with Standard materials and GI in 3DSMAX 5.

yeah that may be true, but the indirect light bump scale did fix his problem. But i didnt know about the raytrace bit, thanks for letting us know :-) i will try changing his materials to raytrace and see what happens
Thanks ^_^
