View Full Version : Tree Villages WIP Game Environment
HokageMegatron 01-20-2007, 04:53 AM Hi everyone! I am creating an environment of alternate fantasy style; it’s my first go at game environment art. The concept artwork isn’t mine, its from Kimag3500, got some nice work up at http://kimag3500.deviantart.com (http://kimag3500.deviantart.com/).

The work is in the earliest stages and I was looking to see what people think, ways to improve the mesh at this stage. I am looking to add further detail when the bulk of the environment is made, to see where my poly count takes me. It’s currently standing at 2000 tri’s.

Also I have a quick render of the mesh…

Thanks

Beautiful. I love the way the model depics into the concept. Although its not exactly like the concept i can see a few unique things added which is fine as many artist do, do that. Something some can't control lol. Just all i can say is on the concept the models of the houses built into the trees are leaning forward a bit off the trunks i think that would need to be shown but apart from that well done. Love it. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the comments, yeah I do see what you mean about the houses, they do need to lean forwards, I’ll touch that up!

The only thing that sticks out to me, apart from the slight deviations from the original concept (which aren't really THAT big a deal, agreed), is the large arch in the center of the structure. I'd recommend smoothing out the inner edge of the arch's curve by, possibly, doubling or trebling the amount of polies you have there. It won't effect your polycount all that much for such a localised poly increase.
Awesome subject. Very inspiring. It looks like you're going to execute this one really well. :)
Keep going

Yeah you are totally right about the main arch in the environment and its need for some extra polys. I touch that up too!

Looks great so far. I will definitely be watching this one. As far as poly count, I wouldn't be too worried about it. I think this concept would translate well into a game in 1 of 2 ways.
1) Be an entire level unto itself. The whole area would probably be "playable space" (contains gameplay elements throughout). In that case the whole scene's tri count could be anywhere from 50,000 to 300,000+.
2) Be a backdrop or scenic view that the player couldn't get to. In that case, it would probably be a combination of matte painting style elements and very low poly geometry to pull off the vista look.
Because your spending polys on the structural detail, I would say go with the first, and go crazy with it. With some more modeled detail and some nice textures, this has alot of potential to be badass! Good luck :)

wow, looking great love the look of it! can't wait to see it textured and finalized.

I like it mate! I think maybe you should bevel the major arch a bit to soften it up and make it look more natural. Looking forward to your updates....

Hi everyone! Finally got some more to post on the environment, I have been working on some structures for a Battlefield 2142 mod between this and the last post.
I have touched up the mesh where people suggested and it has definitely helped a lot, thanks guys.
Now got the base mesh for the first tree down. Its still fairy low poly, standing at 12k tri’s for the first tree.

Looking good Dan, really like it. I reckon you should maybe smooth the normals and add a few polies to the major arch.. its a big focal point and is looking a bit jagged. Cool stuff though!

Excellent work! I agree with MrJames about the arch. It just needs a bit more detail to give a more organic shape.
Keep up the good work

Hi everyone! Thank you for your responses.
Here are some more updates on the piece. I have modelled the mesh of the trees and the extra things now. Still need some tweaking, but what you guys think?

This picture below is my first attempt at a background for the trees using Vue. The foreground is models are coming close to 30k now.

Very cool stuff :D
You've managed to capture the style and quirkiness of the concept well.
I think some little hanging roots and vines would help give it that "entwined with nature" kind of look that the concept has. Just some alpha planes and whatnot draping off overhangs, etc... That's the only thing that looks kind of lost in transit from concept to model.
Any idea how you're going to go about texturing it?

Looking ace mate, I'd agree with the above crit. Any plans to include the top part of the tree...? Texturing should be interesting...

Really beautiful.
The only thing I would say is that there are way to many straight lines. It makes the buildings look like they are built onto the trees rather than carved from them as the original concept suggests.
I think if you look at the original you will not find a straight line in the entire image.

Incredible stuff, hope you find the time to finish it, great progress up till now.

Thanks, yeah I think the comment about the alpha planes ArchangelTalon is totally right and I am definitely going to add some in there.
Currently just Laying out some UV's at the moment.
Really want to get on with the texturing. Thinking of adding some base layers to get the warmth in to textures and then add several layers of grunge on top.
What you think? Any ideas yourself?

WoW this is awesome! i think some mud-boxing or Z-brush for root detail would look cool if you've got it?
