Title: Time Warner Cable Remote Control
Name: Kimberly Wills
Country: United States
Software: Illustrator, Lightwave 3D, Photoshop
3D model based on the TV Cable remote control distributed by Time Warner Cable. This is the final version of a newer remote, created in Lightwave with textures produced in Photoshop. I used photos of the remote to help create it. This model was created for my workplace and will be used in an upcoming commercial for the station I work at, but probably will not be seen outside of NC. Another remote that I created for the station was used in a previous commercial and for occasional on-air graphics.
Thanks in advance for any comments and feedback you can provide.

Good job, well modeled/textured remote - I have one almost identical (but black). The render may need to be a liiiiiiiiiitle sharper to showcase the metal flake-y ness of the remote (I'm sure it's not perfectly smooth but has a little 'bump' to it).

Thanks for the comment : ) This is my first submission to CGTalk, and I'm thrilled that it got posted.
Believe it or not, the top surface is darn near perfectly smooth. It's actually molded plastic rather than metal, and I tried several very very shallow bumps before getting rid of the bump alltogether. What I ended up with was a specularity map which I hoped would give more of an 'irredescent' sort of look, but doesn't appear to have shown up strongly enough.

hi kimberly, i also agree, very good modeling, but in my opinion u should rework lighting and materials, then it will be really great...

I'd agree on strengthening the specularity effect. Maybe you can give just a very soft reflection to it as well? I think for the purposes you are using it for, what you have right now is just fine. How close is the remote going to get to the camera?
A few things caught my eye, but they are pretty minor.
Those grooves at the side of the channel and volume buttons look good, but on the right side, I notice a very small smudge. Averaging the vertices just a bit will give you a nicer looking gradation on those grooves.
If the camera gets really close to the remote, you might want to consider modeling holes into the remote in the shape of each button. This will give a little shading below each button, but will make the render seem more natural. Course, this might take a while.
Overall, I think it's a great start.

Nice job mate! I really like it and i have a couple of questions if you don't mind. I was wondering if you used subpatches for it and if you could post a wireframe before it was subpatched? Great job once again!

Here's a wire frame render
The model is sub divided, and fairly clean, I think. The non-subdivided doesn't give all that much more information.

I agree, actually. I considered modeling holes for each button, but the buttons are a separate layer from the actual remote, and will take forever to model correctly without uneven spaces between the button and remote wall. The remote in the commerical will never be close enough to th screen to notice this, and probably not on screen long enough. It's something I still want to do, but is currently an unecessary detail that I don't have time to do right now. Thanks for the observation though : )
