View Full Version : Anisi's WIP Thread
Anisi 01-19-2007, 09:46 AM I've decided to come here for critique on my pictures as I'm really craving to improve. And from what I've seen, this would be a great place to get critique. I've been browsing and I've seen people improve a lot from the crit they've recieved here.
Anyways here is my first WIP so far. I've hardly drawn gryphons or anything before. I've outlined where I am planning to put the wings so you can see what is underneath them.

And here is the reference sheet of the character (if it helps critiquers).. Click here! (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/25667344/)

this looks great so far. I would suggest not covering up the legs with the wings though...you put some great detail into the legs that shouldn't be hidden

sorry, no help here but just a comment,
I really like the drawing and its should look really good when you've painted it.
I'll keep my eye on this thread.
Good Luck

Maybe think about the composition a bit. He's kinda smack in the centre. You could have some interesting angles on this piece. Imagine seeing a worms eye view of a griffon as he's swooping down...

Thankyou a lot for the help and tips! I'm thinking of resketching the pic to fit with Kevin's crit. I think his idea would look a lot better, but we'll see what happens. I haven't had the motivation to do anymore on the griffin piece, but I have started on a new piece!
Yay for my favourite subjects; kitties! I've only started blocking in colors, but here is what I have so far.

My only problem is that I've never done a blurry background before. I really want to get the photographic effect. How do I go about starting that background? I want to make it look photo realistic, but I'm afraid I'll spoil the whole picture if I'm not careful.

Very nice, I am not sure what to tell you about the background as the colors are quite intense and the orange flowers might really pop into the foreground when you start to paint them, maybe mute the colors a bit ? If you just want it to blur , you could try a smudge tool , a blur tool, or a combination of both possibly.

I've been using Corel Painter for the pic up until now. It is my first painting in Corel. So I'm a bit unsure with all the tools. I might just blur the background in Photoshop and then bring it back into Corel Painter. Thanks for the tip. :)

I would suggest that you look up real animal references for the gryphon. They are part-bird part lion or something, right? look up pictures of birds and lions and get an understanding of how their anatomy works, it will make your gryphon drawing looks more naturalistic :D
I'm not saying this is a bad sketch, though. It'll probably look very good painted, but the front limbs(talons) look kind of splayed out at this moment, and the whole pose is a bit stiff and awkward, that is why I suggested you look up real life refs!

Ok I just had this whole post typed up and I got logged out. ><
Take two...
Here is an update on the cat picture.
I've added the bush into the background and started adding flowers. They still need some cleaning up though. I haven't worked on this since January so I don't feel very inspired or 'connected' to it anymore. But we'll see what happens...

I've scrapped my original gryphon picture and started another one for someone else on DA, its a lot like the other one. My main problem right now is how to lay out the light on top of the clouds..I haven't done clouds before. I'm only just starting to get the hang of Corel Painter as well.

Wow, long time no visit. All previous WIP's have been abandoned. With the gryphon pic I changed it completely, but still didn't get around to finishing it. This was as far as I got:

So I'm currently working on improving my human anatomy. And will be posting more soon. Stay tuned.
