View Full Version : Calling all Maya and Max users (for a newb question)
Tom N. 02-20-2003, 10:46 PM Hey all, I've been using Maya for a little more than a year now, and I just got into learning max on my own. One thing I've noticed is that aaaaaaaaaall the beginner tutorials i've found for max dont tell you the basics, so i was wondering if someone here could help me.
By basics I mean dolly, tumble, zoom... I know theres the buttons at the bottom right corner, but do i really have to click one every time i wanna move my camera differently? seems like a bad workflow
Another basic is just changing camera views, and going from 4 view to 1 view and such.
I know these must be the dumbest questions ever, but if anyone can help me with shortcuts or advice then I can start doing these tutorials more easily.
Any response is appreciated,
-Tom N.

he who asks a question is dumb for 5 minutes; he who doesn't is dumb forever. i would suggest *highly* going to http://www.3dbuzz.com - sign up. once you do on the home page on your left you'll see downloads
http://www.fragcentral.com/~super/3d/3dbuzzDL.gif
simply click it. agree to the terms.. then you'll see a bunch of VTM's (Video Tutorial Magazines). There are four CD's. I suggest starting with the first one, and downloading each of the videos. Also there are tutorials in the Max help file. I do agree that most of the beg-intermediate tutorials out there aren't clear / well put together. GL

Hey thanks a lot.. I'll sign up and check out those videos. I started the tutorials in the help index and they didn't go through some of things I felt that I should know first. Thanks for the reply.

The Buzz VTMs are great, Im a total beginner really, but I could possibly answer your questions just off the VTMs Ive watched, :-)
If your mouse has a middle button, I think you can move around using it, and Alt and it, and some other things too, not sure about them all. For changing camera views, you can select a viewport, and press a certain key to select the view. F for front, B for back, R & L for right and left, K for back, C for camera, P for perspective.
Not completely sure on the accuracy of this though, coz its just from memory of the VTMs, and Im mostly try to learn XSI, not Max.

The help-files covers much.. well.. all of this really. It's even accessed in the same way as Maya, F1 and all :)
Workflow wise I think you'll end up seeing MAX as fairly easy to use. No you don't have to press buttons each time :)
I'm a long-time MAX user who's gone somewhat Maya lately, and for me it was hard to move to it's workflow, which I thought was cumbersome and odd.
As it turns out, once you emerge on the other side, they're both powerful programs with their own neat unique flavor.
And if in a few months you still think MAX is "teh lamx0r", you can take comfort in that if Discreet continues on the path they started with MAX5, MAX will come to look exactly like Maya in a few versions time
