Apart from having different functions in them, I'm not sure myself...

Editable Mesh is an older triangle based poly mesh format. As a data type it has certain limitations. Editable Poly is a whole new data structure that allows for multi-sided polys (ie quads and more). This allows for certain things that you can see taken advantage of in the toolset and scripts available.

I'm not the expert on this, so I'm sure a good modeler can jump in and give some details.

It seems that editable mesh is an obsolete format and could be totally replaced by editable poly, am i wrong?

For lowpoly real-time purposes tri-meshes is still nice. I switch from Poly to Mesh thru'out modeling. Say, like, sometimes I just want to go in and fiddle with the edges so they're laid out properly, and I think Edit Mesh does that better.

It's certainly been superceded, but it's not completely obsolete. It's still probably slightly more stable than Epoly for starters, and I know many many low poly modellers who use it exclusively because it's low poly tools are still slightly better (Turning Edges vs Retriangulating Polys and so on). This could be a case of user inertia I suppose, people will tend to stick with what works unless they can be shown significant reasons to switch. As a format it's not going to be dropped anytime soon though, for legacy reasons as much as anything else, and remember Max still doesn't have Epoly as a modifier at all yet, only Emesh.

And as Gaggle said, there's no reason why you can't just constantly jump back and forth between them and get the best of both worlds. It's not an either/or situation, they can compliment each other.
