Hey everybody! I've got a question regarding baking Global illumination to an object's diffuse texture in Maya 7 with mental ray.

Essentially I would like to generate a globally illuminated diffuse map from a low poly game model with a normal map applied (something that looks similar to an ambient occlusion map would be great). I'd like my diffuse map to reflect detail from the normal map to be used as a base for painting a proper diffuse map in Photoshop.

Any suggestions on a basic illumination and pre-lighting setup to use? My experience with GI in Maya is extremely limited so very simple explanations would be great.

Thanks in advance!

light/shading > batch bake (mental ray) under rendering in the status line drop down menu is gonna be your ticket

I would only bake the final gathering, i wouldn't try using photons and GI

why is that...only fg and not GI

Secondary diffuse bounces on final gather will do what GI does. Only with less setup and possible errors.
