View Full Version : Help: Rigging a Moose in Maya

I need help rigging a 3D moose in Maya.

I want to have the front legs work much like human legs, but having the top parts that are embeded in the torso being influenced by the leg IKs more subtlely. The same thing goes for the back legs. Basically I want the visible legs to have good range of motion control, while having the skeletons which are hidden in the torso moving along, driven by IK, much more subtlely, and showing their effects along the way.

I'm considering several possibilities: multiple IKs, expression/script, set driven. But I have little idea of how to go about doing it, especially if it involves scripting.

Right now I have a fairly detailed low poly model that's been UV unwrapped. I'm planning to import it into Zbrush, detail it, then export normal map, or even use the high poly model for rigging.

Another question comes here. Is it possible to rig and paint skin weights on the low-poly model, then transfer the entire information onto the high poly model? If so, how exactly should I do that? And also, is it possible to animate a low poly model, then see the high-poly model in action? If so, how do I go about setting this up?

I'm also thinking about using blendshapes and influence objects to help simulate the movement of muscles. Any precautions I should take along the way?

Along my research I came across the program called TSM2, but I do want to learn how to do the rig in Maya still, since it should be possible.

Many questions here really. Any help is appreciated. Like many others, I hold great respect and many thanks to this community.

Kevin

After a week of struggling, I kind of solved the problem myself.

I tried using TSM2 for the moose rig. So far it looks pretty good.

Today at work I tried to come up with another solution, solving the front leg problem.

Attached are the two pictures explaining my method, for those who encounter the same problem as me, rigging a horse/moose-like front leg.

Right now I have to deal with normal/ displacement maps. Somehow I just can't get those to work. T_T....
