It says you cannot run less than 1280x1024 at start up in XSI and EXP, and if you edit a layout to fit in EXP you will not be able to save it as saving is disabled. You may also loose your default layouts as some have reported.
So the work around is each time at start up
-view>views>netview
-go to xsinetview, xsinetlive, tools, UI/Viewing/Interaction, UI controls and download my SmallWideDualorToolbarLayouts v1.1 (http://www.softimage.com/xsinet/getFile.asp?Id=1966&Path=/xsinet/content/addons/UI_View_Interac/UI_Controls/SmallWideDualorToolbarLayouts/SmallWideDualorToolbarLayouts.xsiaddon) with 1024*768 1024*960 etc. or ed harriss 1024x768 (http://www.softimage.com/xsinet/getFile.asp?Id=1739&Path=/xsinet/content/addons/UI_View_Interac/UI_Controls/Eds_XSI2_1024x768_Layout/Eds_XSI2_1024x768_Layout.zip)
or here's the default layouts:
-dragndrop the links above onto the XSI 3d view manager to install it.
or -since its not possible if your layouts are lost, go file>addon>install and choose the location of the .addon you DL'd above
-then go to layout> and select the rez/layout you want
-it will not be available at next start up, requiring a repeat of above at each startup
or perhaps back up your default layouts stored in x:/user/softimage/ after first run of xsi and put them back each time or make a batch file to do it and start xsi
