View Full Version : shader needed - steel
Claudio72 02-20-2003, 06:13 PM Hi,
I absolutelly need a looking real steel shader.
I need that one used in the kitchen........you know, that one with blurred reflaction and a bit of antistophy........
I'm making some experiments but I'm missing something important......and the shader I'm making sucks!! Maybe it's just the enviroments, but I'm also rendering in hdri env and nothing good happens...........
thank's in advance
claudio
p.s.: The exact name of the shader I need is called "Acciaio Satinato" in italian

I will share with you later my results..........I'm rendering 7 diff test in a scene............

All you need is lumas in luminance channel (anisotrophy checkbox activated, planar scratch projection) and a slight bhodinut fresnel fx in the reflection channel, nothing more. Make sure you're using one or more light in the scene, with the single GI you won't see the speculars :wavey:

I will give a try using your hint third_, now I'm quite satisfied with sla danel because it give me control over the reflection convultion, I can easily control(100 try every time) the blur of the reflection according to the antistophy and it seems this do the job......

The BhodiNut Lumas 2D shader does exactly the same work of BhodiNut Danel but it still gives you the possibility to use all the other 2D channels of a normal material. This is a case where a good nodebased rendetree would be really useful :wavey:
Claudio72

yes, I notice .... but the first result with your hint doesn't achive the danel result, maybe I've to try more........but you gave me really a good Hint(it seem also faster, but I don't have the beautiful blur I have with danel)!!!
in v8 the expresso is not a nodebased rendertree?
Now I'm using v7
thank's again third_

No, it's not a nodebased rendetree YET ;)

mmmmmmmhhhhhh.......I've seen something over the maxon site that let me think it was.........but......I trust you!!!

You can use materials with Xpresso, but i doens't have any possibility to function like a nodebased rendertree yet, i think they'll add something similar soon or late... we will see :)

do you think for this kind of steel it's usefull to increase the reflection depth or something like that in the render settings??

it seems for the knob the shrink wrap works better

if I blur the reflection of the standard shader, it slow down the time of render(same as danel) but the result is better
In DANEL use a shrinkwrap projection in the anistrophy channel. Rotate the 3D texture projection so the Y-Axis is parallel with the door knob ( the y-axis points toward the end of the knob ). Next, go into roughness and use Fbm with two octaves. Turn on Hard evaluation. Run the scale up so it is about ten three to five times larger than what you would normally consider viable. Play with the color in the roughness grit to add some more wear. Tweak to your heart's content. Ahhh, the joy of nodes in texturing ( ok, I am teasing, and I like it!!! )

thank's darf, I'm still experimenting but I like more weavy turbolence than FBM.........
I hit the point, I own this kind of steel now.
You all helped me alot!!

heh heh....isn't there a brushed steel shader on the cinema cd...sla presets...anisotropic...dunno just a thought...might be on goodie cd...not that you probably need it...but for anybody out there reading this and thinking they want to have a play...

I've many problems blurring the reflection..........fresnel is not enough...........I don't know why........

got it, the problem seems to be the specular settings of the lumas, but not all the job has done

Hi claudio,
thanks for posting that file :applause:
I too have had problems with the look that you have achieved. You have done a nice job here. I'm gonna have to examine your file w/a magnifing glass to see how you achieved your results!
Thx,
paul

Hi all, sorry for digging in past topics, but I am having trouble creating a good brush steel-like material for my Hindenburgh mesh. Im using lumas to get the anisotropic effect, but there's much tweeking going on now that just won't cut it.
So, Claudio, Im wondering if you could make these materials available again, would very much appreciate it!
Cheers!

Ciao Claudio,
ciao - jdd

Hmm, seems you took it off. I would like to have those too. Can somebody make them available or send them to me?
Thanks for sharing

I guess since Claudio made it public it would be okay if I hosted the file for a little while. http://www.3danvil.com/steels.zip
If you're around Claudio, let me know if you want me to take it down and I'll do so instantly.

this is the brushed steel shader i use. I used it mainley on my machineflesh entry where this litle tut can also be found. I know this is allitle late but for the bennefit of those just browsing the forums here it is.
create a danel shader and change the difuse color to the color you want for the metal for the most part i used r-79 g-85 b-86. specular 1 stays the same. specular two should have the color changed to and orange white. and specular 3 to a cool blue white. In the reflection tab bump up intensity to 42 edge intensity to 83 and falloff to 75. Check the box for utilize anisotropic scratches. and set the blur up to 25 and set samples at 12.in the basic tab enable roughness and anisotrophy. In the roughness chanel change the function to naki and amplitude to .2%. change the scale to 2000. Put the grit color to a dark gray and set intensit to -9 lower the high clip value to around 65. In the anisotrophy section i set the mode to shrink wrap and mess around with the values sum. going down i use 700 90 67 58 100 33 and uncheck the box for specular 3. And there you have it hope this helps.

ohuch!
I've not payed attention to this thread in the last days, and I'm sorry for the delay in my answer.
Thank's Adam to make the file available again, it is completely free, so you should use it in any personal/commercial project.
thank's jdd for the link, I will take a look today (e ti saluto Osmar)
