I started mucking around with a blurry photo I took of the grand canyon (it was so cold there!) and this being my first matte painting... i'd say its coming along nicely.I have only ever done 3d modelling but recently i have decided to try some painting and its becoming rather fun... so i hope i get somewhere with it.
Anyway here it is so far:
And here is the painting again except with some black structure concepts (very rough)... The closest structure is going to be my focus point in the fore-ground:
And here is my reference photo i took, it is very blurry but it gives me something to go off:
Well, please give me your thoughts so far!

I have just a small update here, i have put a little bit more detail into some parts of the landscape and i have now started working on the city concept.
Actually i should move the fore-ground city a bit to the right of the scene... closer to the centre but not quite. Anyways, all thoughs are welcome.

I've been busy with work lately and haven't had much time to work on anything much at all... the canyon city idea is slippying from me, i don't think i've start the project correctly with a concept and what not. Anyways I did do a quick concept sketch on paper today that i hope will go somewhere (image attached below). I haven't work out a focus point or the general story for the concept yet, its just a landscape at the moment.
Well thats all from me at the moment.
P.S What is the general size you work on your matte paintings at?

Hi Zane well nice idea on the canyon city, but I think you still need lots of work to get that image look like a photorealistic matte painting,
well the second quick drawing is tto rough yet, think about composition and choose an interesting focal node, I would not work in a square canvas, try working matte paintings always in 16:9 aspect

Unfortuantely i think this landscape is a bit difficult to add any sort of story too... which i like my work to have.... i'm not sure. Anyways I'm going continue doing some sketches working on ideas and see what i can come up with.
Also, i would have to agree with you on the canyon idea... and at my skill level i don't think it could have been done very well.

Well I'm back again, this time i've decided to change the title (edit: is it possible to change the title?) because its a bit irrelivant now. This thread is where i'm going to make you all cringe with my crazy attempts at Matte Painting. :twisted:
Anyway I have decided to do a bit of a study on matte paintings choosing a simple mountain as the subject. I have done up a thing below of how I think the process goes:
So basicly I want to refine this matte painting process from your input and then continue to work on each section and update it as they are completed here.
Perhaps others will learn from this and not just me... anyways, what is process you guys use to create your matte painting?

Hey Zane good idea!
But i think the first thing you should do is concept art and color picking , then the reference photos and the rest. One of the big things to learn in matte painting is to not be restricted by your photos eg -looking up photos , finding one you really like then building a matte around that pic.
One thing you might want to do since your learning and I am doing myself is taking the time find sites and books with great references and keep them all bookmarked. Also learning brush work in photoshop.
I just created a schedule that goes around my job.I know this has nothing to do with the order of steps to create a matte , but you might want to make yourself something like this to help you with learning all you need to know (keep in mind this one is for more then matte painting)

I see where your coming from with the Reference Photo stuff... It makes more sense to establish a concept, then pick your palette and then get references.

You also do have a good point with bookmarking good matte tutorials/matte painting sites which i have been doing but I also purchased the d'artist matte painting book yesterday and I can't wait until i get it!:bounce:

Also still looking for concept drawing tips as well as any additions to the matte painting process i have done up or any changes.

I think the first thing you need to start learning for concept art is setting up your composition. Remember you want to be in control of where the views eye goes , you want them to start in one area and then lead them to the focal point. Right now I do not see a focal point in your concept. I find its a good practice to start off with basic shapes and arrows on the canvas so that you know what your plan is for leading the people before you even start painting even thou you may have a clear idea for the theme of the painting. And dont forget that even sun llight , mist etc can all help you in leading the eye aswell.
Also your point of interest should (well not always) be your highest point of contrast either it be light or color.
Make sure you have a good unterstanding of what your doing. Look up references that you probably wont even use in the painting but just stare at them , look at detail , think about how you could recreate that. And if you dont know how to recreate it, really try and figure out because you never know you might stumble on a process that could save you time for your next painting or make it that much more real.A big part of matte painting i think is problem solving. And one thing you learn could not just help you in one painting but maybe all your work from that time on.
I am still learning all this stuff myself as well.

Some very helpful tips there matellis, thankyou, I'm going to keep experimenting with concept art... and try and get some updates to you guys this next week. Unfortantely my timetable is starting to slowly get crowded.
