Hey, having a major problem with 3ds max, both 5 and 5.1. Every time I start working in the material editor it freezes on me. I mean my computer just stops and I have to give it a cold reboot. Max 5 did this and I thought if I got the 5.1 update that it would fix this, well...it didn't. Also the update didn't fix the issue of the dx9 drivers not working with max either. This is really frustrating, having to work in the material editor with the dread of my computer crashing at any minute.

anyway, just to give you an idea of my system.

amd athalon 1.2 ghz
512 ram
asus a7a266 motherboard (i think)
geforce 2 mx (as main display, has main max window)
ati AIW radeon (second display, toolbars n' stuff, material editor is on this one)
running dx8 drivers

if you guys have any ideas, plz let me know, this is really slowing down my work. I'm going to try working with opengl drivers, see if it makes any difference.

nVidia drivers and ATI drivers both installed on the same machine?

Hmmm.... I dunno, dude. Just sounds like you're asking for a lot of trouble by doing that.

At this point, if using OpenGL doesn't solve the problem, I'd be uninstalling the G-force cards drivers, then taking that card out of the machine. (because it's the weaker of the 2 cards you have, and if I remember correctly, other people have had problems with the Max 5 / G-force 2 MX combo)

Then REINSTALL the ATI drivers and see if everything is working OK. If it is...

I don't know what else to tell you.

Oh... actually... I do...

I'm not going to go check the specs on your motherboard, but if that thing has a 'VIA Northbridge' chip on it, it would be fun to go wing that %*&%'n thing through the VIA corp. office's front window. Their chipsets have caused more computer problems during the past few years, than Microsoft has during their entire existence. I'll never buy anything that has VIA's worthless garbage on it, ever again.

I'm pretty dependent on the dual display thing. so I need both cards. The opengl drivers seem to have more problems then the dx8 drivers. I think my best bet at this point is to just go back to max 4.

If the DX9 drivers are your problem the only way (as of right now) is to reinstall windows. Which is your best bet as it only takes 45 min's to install a fresh copy.. whereas it may take you a day to get an answer here. Gl

LOL....:D, thanx both of you.

This problem I'm having I guess is pretty specific to my machine. Mainly I just thought I would ask to see if anyone else has incountered this problem. I'm probably just going to go back to max 4 as it worked perfectly.

btw, I'm not to sure if I have a VIA chipset on my motherboard, but I do remember when I first bought my parts for this computer that the motherboard out of the box didn't even have a bios  so I had to use my friends computer to manually flash it. Kinda like useing jumper cables on a car.
