View Full Version : character: my avatar guy - full body
betelgeuse 02-20-2003, 03:31 PM As I've been modeling in Wings3d for about 5 months, I've got several models in various stages going on at once. This is one of them. I'd like to do get the basic anatomy on the body right - I'm going for lean muscular, not body builder. Disregard the hands and feet for right now; I know they're pretty weak at the moment.

Is it male or female ? ;)

Very nice job, and easy to critique too :)
1. The chest, particularly the pectorals. It looks like you've squashed them together too much. The way they are now gives them a sort of female look, without quite getting there, I'd suggest you widen them from the sides a bit too correct this.
2. Next is the abdominal area. The muscles groups there are improperly formed. Perhaps making the definitions betweeen them greater will help this?
3. The muscles on the neck are far too distended and pushed off to the side.

Phoenix: Thanks, but I know there's more to fix than the back.
Jamonit: Yes!
Temporal: Good critique. I'm not sure about the abdominals; I was actually thinking of making the muscles there more subtle.

I really like those knees and calves, they look cool.

Personally, I think I would pull the ribs out, then pull the pecs out. The chest in general feels small.
Also, I don't have any proportions at hand, but the legs feel short, and the torso too long. I wonder if you might just need to grab the entire pelvis and pull it up slightly.
I think the head might be a bit large, or the neck a bit thin. Either way, I have the expectation that I should see the side of the neck, or even where it meets up with the base of the skull from the front angle. Any one of those things could be contributing to this.
In any case, we're talking about some idealized male. Every time I venture out to the store or something, I end up looking at some guy's face thinking; "if I modeled that guy exactly and posted him on ctalk, people would be all over me, pointing out things that need to be 'fixed'"
I think you're definitely in the realm of human proportions ;)

Update of some things:
Slightly broader chest and seperation of pectorals, although I think the delineation of the seperation is too clean.
The neck is the same width, but I did pull the trapezius in.
Hmm... the legs may be a little short - he's a little over 7 heads tall which is short but within the realm of possibility. I think he should be a little taller and the point to correct that would be the legs.
I think the neck is ok for now, but I may feel differently later.
I think the chest, in general, needs more detail.

shorter torso and longer legs - slightly taller overall; abdominals softened

Of course I have an opinion. I always have an opinion.
You're obviously not going for a completely realistic peice, so I won't comment on the head. The hands and feet are a little large, I think, but that may be one of the elements that you are diverging on.
The chest looks much better, but I think the area just under the pecs looks suspiciously clean. Some ribs or other muscles in that area would probably help.
The angle of the spine looks a little off. Standing straight up, I would expect the thigh muscles to protrude a little farther than the stomach.
The biggest "off" area would be the bum, and the way the lower back muscles blends with it. Some reference might help here.

Hey it's looking good!
I think what strikes me as a bit off is the upper arms. They look extremely short, especially compared to the lower arms.
Perhaps it's part of the character design, but i think it looks a tad wrong.
And the hands need a little more work.
Apart from that,

OK, good critiques guys!
Gremlin: The abs - the update below addresses that.
Michael: I've worked on the chest some and abs, but still need more detail around the sides - perhaps some indication of the serratus anterior muscles?
The lower back area may need more work, but looks OK to me for the time being. Will revisit.
Carina: Thanks for dropping by. The upper arms may be a tad short, but when you bring the elbows in, they're hitting close to the right part of the torso. I did lengthen them a bit, although you may not be able to tell from the attachment.
Hands and feet I'll get to later.
Back to work!
I think the issue with the arms is that, as you said, you're trying to make him look lean, not like a bodybuilder. His biceps look too big in relation to his newly-toned-down chest and abs and stuff. a lean person would have more flattened, i.e. oval cross-section biceps.

Jboy, I think you're right. I did slim down the biceps some.
I think I've got the body more less how I want it. I now need to work on the hands and feet. I may just give him some boots or footwear of some sort. Then there's a costume to do.... Hmm what to do, what to do!!!

The upper arms do look slightly more in proportion when they're slightly leaner. It's a bit hard to see from those perspectives though.

If you were to bleach his skin a little bit and give him black hair, clothes and a little boy, he would kinda resemble Michael Jackson...hehehe, sorry

Hee hee, no problem.:p
Me personally...I liked the abs before the update...it had a Michelangelo feel to them to me...just my opinion....good job though keep it up:thumbsup:

Sorry, I just noticed your post. Here's an older version in wireframe. Not sure how much you can tell from it though.
