I use a biped and one plane with a picture for reference, so I can model with the right proportions and don't forget anything.

Not with my video card. No worries really I have a plan B. I am using displacment maps the old way. Just UV mapped bum maps I make in Photoshop and apply them to the model set it for displacment. Works OK. A bit more tedious and better not to go for extreme results. But it is a workable solution for now. In the future I might do some upgrades and do that but not now. I will have to press on. I need more modeling disipline for what I do.

Hi SergioSantos,

Nice work, looks like a clean base mesh, since the overall surface looks the same, i'd imagine how a procedural approach on the shading for this creature would work out, watch the chest and hips though, other then that, keep it up..!

Great work Sergio! My only comment thus far from looking at your original reference frame is that some of the proportions need a bit of adjustment. I think the legs and waist look good but I would consider scaling the torso, head and arms up a little built for bulk.

i agree with cameo the torso and especially the hangs seem a bit short.

the sculpting makes a huge difference - looking very good. Are you going to put him in a scene or just make a model shot? FYI: I have added photos in the reference thread of the actual model.

and here are the rules on what you need to supply:

For each model 3 Orthographic renders ARE REQUIRED. These renders are for TOP, SIDE, BOTTOM views and a BEAUTY RENDER.BEAUTY RENDER:

Final RENDERS should be rendered at 1600 X 1200 OR 1200 x 1600 in JPG format.(Post only as link) A smaller 800x 600 OR 600 x 800 image should be posted on the threads.


ORTHOGRAPHIC RENDERINGS:



Ortographic renderings ARE REQUIRED for EACH entry and should be rendered at 800 x 600 OR 600x800.

- This means you need to submit renders of the from the Front, Sides (2), Back, Top and bottom.


TURNTABLE ANIMATION (VOLUNTARY).

- I recomentd to aid the voters a turntable rendering of the model. It would have to be done in QuickTime or Windows Media at a resolution of 600 x 400 OR 300 x 200. The render might be done as a Quickshade or Beauty Render.

Please add a brief text description about your piece.
The artist also has to post total length of time it took to do and program used.
Future topics for hardcore Challenges will be picked at random from the list on

Are you using GI/final gather there? It doesn't really look as though you are.

nope.

no GI or Final Gather, only Ambient Occlusion.
I'll do a test with FG, but I don't think that it worth it in my laptop, too much time of rendering.

Very nice looking Talos there, his coloring seem a bit off still but thats ok, probably just my monitor :)
Top notch model

Mine is nowhere near this complete, I might go for a different pose now

Hey Sergio, a while since I've checked out your entry.

Comparing your target frame to your latest wip the main differences I can spot are in his face and arms. The arms seem to bulky and the face looks quite compact (looks more Hulk than Talos to me atm). Think its the nose/chin that are most giving me this impression. As a unique character I think it works pretty well, but it still needs a little bit more work if you are trying to nail the Talos from the film. Keep going :thumbsup:

I think you're right in what you say, I'll try to correct the arms and the head, but I'm running out of time and the character is already pose...

I didn't pretend to make a 1:1 exact copy of the original, I like to add something by myself.
So I like to think that I've made what I felt when I was a kid and I watched the movie... sort of...

I don't know if Mr Harryhausen likes 3D or not, but sure I enjoyed these films and this is a great oportunity to make what I dreamt when I watched the movies.

Thanks for the comments, it still needs some touches.
I'll try to make it a little bit better.

Hi Sergio, I think your putting your own mark on this character and I understand it's from what you drempt after watching Ray's movies. Only I think the eyes need to be more defined, they are kinda lost at the moment. Maybe pushing them a little more oriental could help?

Good luck in finishing him on time any way, nice effort.
