GUTs Challenge

The Mission:
Make the best ever Texture map and UV projection in a week and a half.

The Payoff:
Bragging rights. Getting to judge and decide the next challenge. Level up your texturing skills!

The Gear:
One .OBJ file per contest supplied to all participants. From there use your favorite 3D app to UV map it, then get rolling in Photoshop, GIMP, or what ever 2D image editor you like and wow us with your texturing skillz. A Wacom Tablet is suggested too.

The Timeline:
Each contest starts on a Monday, every other Monday. There will be exactly 10 days to create and submit your submission. The remainder of the second week will be devoted to judging.

January 2007 Part II: Primitive Instincts

Continuing in the tradition of primitives, your goal this week is to be as innovative as possible with a cylinder. Originality counts big here.

Tech Specs/Guidlines:

Use the supplied OBJ, DO NOT change it. (Part of the fun of this, is that everyone has the same object to start with)

512 x 512 of pixels to be divided (if you want to) in any way. That means four 256 x 256 for example, or just one 512 x 512. You can use less, but not more.

You may use any type of map, as long as you do not go over the previously mentioned pixel budget. For example: 256^2 diffuse, spec, normal, and alpha maps will work. However, two 512^2 maps of any kind will not.

You must specify what type of game that it is for and what purpose it serves. for example: MMORPG, decorative prop; or FPS, item holding prop; or puzzle-strategy game, character.

WIP Posts should be made in the UGAC forum titled GUTs-02-cgtalk_name. For example mine would be "GUTs - 02 - Blengine".

Final posts will be on this thread when you are completed. Please post a render of the object with the texture(s) applied and the flats.

Judges are ineligible to win, but are highly encouraged to participate.

Deadline:
Your final submission is due no later than Wednesday, January 24th, 2007 at 11:59 PM EST.

I changed the topic. Sorry if anyone started on the last one!

Damn, and here I was about to ask a question based upon the original specs... the one requiring an inside of a tube. A problem I considered quite difficult considering it was a closed cylinder. Consider me a dumbass at this point... PUNCH ME, I LOVE IT!

NME, don't know what you are doing, but I'd suggest trying an alpha map to get rid of the the top and/or bottom.

Hmm, I'd like to do something, but I'm completely out of ideas. I've got to make up for talking about doing something for the last one and then not doing a thing...

To get things rolling here's my non-competing entries.

Tire stack - an environment prop for a survival horror game
The tower - a doorway in and out of a courtyard for any game . A wall would be running through the middle of it.

I would've chosen the tire stack for my competing entry.

Very nice stuff! And I've thought up an idea of something to do, so lets see if I can make it while trying to put my reel and portfolio together :)

Kadastrophic your prop was creative, the textures clean, and it's useful in almost every game, but it doesn't push the limits far enough for a texturing contest. Runy, this was a very unexpected idea. The texturing is a little sloppy but overall it looks pretty good, especially the more you look at it.

Runy is the winner of the 2nd contest, congratulations!
